Heinkel He 111 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Heinkel He 111 was the primary Luftwaffe medium bomber during the early stages of World War II, and is perhaps the most famous symbol of the German side of the Battle of Britain.
In the early 1930s Ernst Heinkel decided to build the world's fastest passenger plane, a lofty goal met with more than a little skepticism by the German aircraft industry and its newly evolving political leadership.
It was only a matter of time before they turned their attention to developing a larger and more powerful twin-engine version of the Blitz, producing a plane that had many of the Blitz's features – including its elliptical wing with an inverted gull wing, small rounded control surfaces, and BMW engines.

 He111 at Frederick 2000
The Heinkel company in Germany flew the first prototype He 111 in February of 1935, however as with so many aircraft types developed at that time, it was supposedly designed to be an airliner, and entered service as such with Lufthansa in 1936.
Since it was one of the losing combatants during the war, it's very rare nowadays to see any German aircraft flying at airshows, though there are a few, such as Messerschmitt Bf109E and Bf109G fighters and a couple of examples of the Mitsubishi Zero fighter in more or less original condition.
With no real opposition the Heinkels of Germany's Condor Legion were able to carry their internal bombloads of 1000 kilograms (2205 pounds) with impunity, their most famous or infamous action being the bombing of the town of Guernica.

The Heinkel He 70 was designed to a 1932 Lufthansa specification for an aircraft to compete with the Lockheed Orions operated by other carriers, such as Swissair.
Heinkel developed a further variant the He 170 for Hungary in 1937 and this differed in having a Mistral-Major engine capable of 679-kW.

A contemporary to the Heinkel 111 (which it beat into the air by three months), the Ju 86 was, like its rival, designed as both a civi airliner and bomber.
This latter version was the last to serve with the Luftwaffe (bombers being afforded low priority during the last year of the war), but many interesting projects continued to be pursued, including the conversion of He 177V38 as a carrier of Germany's atomic bombs, which in the event did not materialise.
The big Heinkel Greif bombers, originally intended to provide the Luftwaffe with a strategic bombing force, encountered so many development problems that they only entered service in quantify during the last 18 months of the war.

 Matchbox 1/72 He-70 Preview
The Heinkel He-70 was a German response to the fast Lockheed Orion single engined passenger aircraft of 1931.
Actually, it was the He-65 that was the original design, but it was soon obvious that the fixed gear He-65 would not be fast enough and work on that was stopped.
Heinkel used retractable main landing gear and a closely cowled 630 hp BMW V1 liquid cooled V-12.

One of the strangest designs to enter service in the German Luftwaffe during WW II was the Heinkel He 177 that on first sight appears to be a twin engined bomber.
The decals further reinforce this impression and the end result is a superb rendition of the Heinkel He 177 A-5 and clearly a model kit to be highly recommended particularly if WW II Luftwaffe bomber aircraft is your interest.
Heinkel are usually associated with bomber designs but beside their more militaristic aircraft such as the He 111 they were responsible for the production of several fast commercial types and one of the most impressive of these was the He 70.

In 1942, the RLM contacted Junkers to design a four-engined jet bomber, which became the Ju 287.
In June 1943, the RLM issued a different specification for a two seat bomber with a bombload of 2000 kg (4409 lbs) and a speed of 800 km/h (497 mph) over a range of 2500 km (1554 miles).
Some of this design work was later used for the Heinkel He 343.

However, in early 1936, the plane was given 1,000 hp Daimler Benz DB 600A engines which improved performance dramatically enough to bring in substantial orders.
As soon as possible, the Luftwaffe replaced the Heinkel with the Junkers Ju 88, reassigning the Heinkel to night operations and other specialized tasks until, by war's end, it was being used primarily as a transport.
One of the more bizarre adaptations of the Heinkel by the Luftwaffe was the He 111 Z-1, in which two He 111s were joined at the wing with a special section containing a fifth engine.

Born out of a 1938 Luftwaffe requirement for a heavy bomber/anti-shipping aircraft that was also capable of dive bombing the He.177 was an impressive aircraft and when everything worked correctly she was a marvel to behold.
Designed by Heinkel and produced by both Heinkel and Arado Handelsgesellschaft the aircraft gave the appearance of a twin engined bomber but was in truth a four engine behemoth.
Besides reoccurring problems with fuselage rigidity and control surface flutter the fact that two Daimler Benz engines were packed into the nacelle linked to a single four blade propeller with inadequate cooling resulted in persistent engine fire issues.

But Heinkel secretly flew the He277 with four 1-750hp DB 603A at Vienna, as the first of a major production programme.
The almost completly redesigned He274 was a high-altitude bomber developed at the Farman factory at Suresnes, with four 1,850hp engines, a 145ft wing and twin fins.
