I chose the 1/72 Revell Heinkel He 177A-5 because I wanted something other than my usual 1/48 scale aircraft so I wouldn’t be tempted to do anything except build out-of-the-box and could therefore concentrate on the overall finish.
The Heinkel I was modelling operated from the coast of the Bay of Biscay on long-range reconnaissance missions over the Atlantic (hence the cloud pattern camouflage on its belly).
The finished scene represents a He 177 of KG 40 based in France in January 1944.

Aircraft: The Greif (Griffon) was conceived as a long range heavy bomber from a requirement for same in about 1938 when a contract to develop one was essentially given to Heinkel (based on their success with the He-111 medium bomber).
The He-177 had a very troubled career with three prototypes lost to engine and gearbox fires and wing structural problems in the testing stages.
About 900 Greifs were built, but many were to be lost from these same problems as well as other structural failures that plagued its lifetime and it was effectively in service for just over a year and a half, from late 1942 to mid 1944.
