  Heinkel He 219
The Heinkel He 219 Uhu (Owl) was a famous night fighter used late in World War II by the Luftwaffe.
Heinkel was sure he had a winner and sent the design off to the RLM in January 1942 while he funded the first prototype out of pocket.
Nevertheless it's equally clear that the plane should have been allowed to continue to be produced, and an NJG armed with this plane instead of their motley collection of outdated heavy fighters and converted light bombers would have been considerably stronger opposition for the RAF.

he He-219 was conceived by Ernst Heinkel in the summer of 1940 as Project P.1060, a private-venture multirole fighter.
The He-219 was fitted with the combat-tested Telefunken FuG-212 ("FuG" for "funkgerat" or "radio equipment") "Lichenstein" C-1 intercept radar, first used operationally in early 1942.
Despite the aircraft's successes, Erhard Milch, another Heinkel opponent who was chief of aircraft procurement and supply, persuaded the RLM in May 1944 to cancel the whole program.

Heinkel's He 219 Uhu is undoubtedly one of the most advanced aircraft to emerge from World War II.
The He 219 was a superb and lethal gun platform and the later versions packed as many as eight cannon, including the potent 30mm "Schrage Musik" which fired upward into a bomber's belly at an oblique angle.
The Heinkel He 219 is a very stable and predictable aircraft and can be trimmed "hands-off" for any flight regime.

Potentially one of the Luftwaffe's most effective night fighters, the Heinkel He 219 "Uhu" (Owl) was an aircraft that suffered from the poor judgement of senior members of the government and the Luftwaffe high command (principally, in this case, Generalfeldmarschall Erhard Milch, Inspector General of the Luftwaffe).
The He 219 was, without a doubt, an excellent all weather airplane but flight tests conducted at Farnborough after War showed that Heinkel fighter's reputation was somewhat overrated.
Indeed, the maximum speed of the He 219 aircraft equipped with DB 603A engines, SN-2 antennas and flame dampers was 585 km/h.

The He 219 series featured a crew of two and was powered by a pair of Daimler Benz DB603 engines.
Unlike other Luftwaffe night fighters which were modified versions of other types of aircraft, the Heinkel He 219 was purpose-built to race out to a potential target under control of a ground radar intercept controller, then use its own radar to close for the kill, all at night.

WW2 Warbirds: the Heinkel He 219 Uhu - Frans Bonné
In 1940 Heinkel made a proposal to the german government for a twin-engine heavy fighter that could be adopted for torpedo bombing and/or for medium bomber duties.
The strong political antipathy by the German government against Heinkel sure wasn't shared by the night-fighter pilots, whose lives were dependent on the quality of their aircraft.
It was a Heinkel He 219A-0/R2 that in the night of 11/12 June 1943 scored it's first kill.
