 Ernst Heinkel Information
Heinkel had been a critic of Hitler's regime from the time that he had been forced to sack Jewish designers and staff in 1933.
Heinkel moved to Vienna and started a new design bureau there, working on the Heinkel He 274 design until the war ended.
At the end of the war Heinkel was arrested by the Allies but evidence of anti-Hitler activities and his treatment by the regime led to his acquittal and he was allowed to go free, although his company (along with the rest of Germany's aviation industry) was initially forbidden to produce aircraft.

Heinkel also provided the Luftwaffe's heaviest operational bomber, the Heinkel He 177, although this was never deployed in significant numbers.
Heinkel was less successful in selling fighter designs - before the war, the Heinkel He 112 had been rejected in favour of the Messerschmitt Bf 109, and Heinkel's attempt to top Messerschmitt's design with the Heinkel He 100 failed due to political interference within the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM - Reich Aviation Ministry).
In 1939, the Heinkel He 176 and Heinkel He 178 became the first aircraft to fly under liquid-fuel rocket and turbojet power respectively, and Heinkel was the first to develop a jet fighter to prototype stage, the Heinkel He 280.

Originally designated He 177 A-4, the He 274 was a high-altitude development of the He 177.
While originally considered a version of the He 177, growing incompatability of parts led to the redesignation to He 274 and reassignment of the project to SAUF.
French resistance workers conspired to slow down development of the He 274 so that the prototypes were not ready at the time of the German withdrawal in July 1944.

Science Fair Projects - Heinkel He 177
The twin-engines had first been introduced on the Heinkel He 119 to reduce drag where they worked trouble-free, but their tight installation in the He 177 led to considerable problems.
This was in part due to overly optimistic design requirements which in addition to long-range, high-speed, and carry a large bomb-load, was to be capable of dive bombing.
Though Goering forbade Heinkel to develop a four engine version, Heinkel did anyways, leading to the development of the Heinkel He 274 and the Heinkel He 277 which had separate engines in the more commonly seen fashion.

 Warbirds: / Heinkel He 177 / He 277 / He 274

Heinkel He 177 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Heinkel He 177 Greif (Griffin) was a twin-engine long-range World War 2 bomber of the Luftwaffe.
The insistence of this engine configuration on the part of the Reichsluftfahrtministerium, the German Air Ministry, stemmed directly from their determination that the aircraft should be capable of dive-bombing, a manoeuvre manifestly impossible in craft with four propellers.
Though Goering forbade Heinkel to develop a version with four separate nacelles, Heinkel did anyway, leading to the development of the Heinkel He 274 and the Heinkel He 277 which had a more commonly seen engine arrangement.

The building of He 274 began at Suresne (France) in 1943, but the prototype He 274V1, nearly completed, had never flown when the Allies occupied the factory in 1944.
The German tentatives to destroy it were not accomplished and the french repaired it and then they flew it, after had been redesigned AAS 01A.

An unusual feature of the airplane was the use of twin engines in each nacelle driving a single propeller.
The paired engine nacelles had first been introduced on the Heinkel He 119 to reduce drag where they worked well, but their tight installation in the He 177 led to considerable problems.
These resulted in the main from the poor packaging of the engine installations causing oil leakage onto the hot exhaust manifolds on the two middle cylinder banks.

1) The Heinkel He-111 wasn't the best german bomber...it was very slow, and carried only 2000 kg of bombs (The B-17 carried 7000 kg aprox.), but it was the most numbered medium bomber of the Luftwaffe in the early years of the war.
Maybe the best German bomber could had been the Heinkel He-274, called the "Amerika bomber".But only were built 2 prototypes.
