Luftwaffe Annex - Warbirds Resource Group - Heinkel He 277
An attempt by Heinkel to rectify the problems of the He 177 by mounting four single engines in place of the dual coupled engines, the He 277 was originally met with indifference by Goering.
Heinkel was actually banned from developing this aircraft and secretly proceeded by designating it the He 177B.
During a meeting with Hitler, Heinkel mentioned the aircraft as a solution to a specification Hitler was making.

Heinkel was established at Warnemünde in 1922 as the restrictions on German aviation imposed by the Treaty of Versailles were relaxed.
Heinkel was less successful in selling fighter designs - before the war, the Heinkel He 112 had been rejected in favour of the Messerschmitt Bf 109, and Heinkel's attempt to top Messerschmitt's design with the Heinkel He 100 failed due to political interference within the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM - Reich Aviation Ministry).
In 1939, the Heinkel He 176 and Heinkel He 178 became the first aircraft to fly under liquid-fuel rocket and turbojet power respectively, and Heinkel was the first to develop a jet fighter to prototype stage, the Heinkel He 280.

The He 277 was a four engined version of the He 177.
Early on Heinkel proposed using four separate engines on the He 177, but the RLM was generally opposed to four engined bombers, and refused to support the project.
Heinkel continued to work on the project, under the designation He 177B, but initial test results were not promising.

Messerschmitt Me 264 Book Review by Brett Green (Classic Publications)
There was even the fear that this formidable machine might be used to drop atomic weapons on the USA at will.
The reality was that Germany could not afford to build a fleet of these long-range bombers and, in any case, that the Luftwaffe's experience with their heaviest operational bomber, the Heinkel He 177, was fraught with mechanical and technical failures, and limited operational advantages over medium bombers or large maritime aircraft adapted to specialist roles.
Despite the frustrations of the single prototype, the story of the Me 264 remains a fascinating one.
