  Special Hobby 1/72 Heinkel He-59
Aircraft History: The He 59 was a biplane designed in the early 30's as a conventional type, which could be fitted with wheel or float landing gear for use in the landplane and seaplane roles.
Initially the He 59b landplane version first flew before the He 59a floatplane prototype, but it was decided that the landplane variant would not be proceeded with, so the He 59A pre-production floatplane version was developed.
Heinkel built 16 He 59B-1 production version which were used for service trials in the maritime attack role, and were followed by 126 He 59B-2's and -3's which saw service in the Spanish Civil War.

Heinkel was established at Warnemünde in 1922 as the restrictions on German aviation imposed by the Treaty of Versailles were relaxed.
Heinkel was less successful in selling fighter designs - before the war, the Heinkel He 112 had been rejected in favour of the Messerschmitt Bf 109, and Heinkel's attempt to top Messerschmitt's design with the Heinkel He 100 failed due to political interference within the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM - Reich Aviation Ministry).
In 1939, the Heinkel He 176 and Heinkel He 178 became the first aircraft to fly under liquid-fuel rocket and turbojet power respectively, and Heinkel was the first to develop a jet fighter to prototype stage, the Heinkel He 280.

The Heinkel He 176 was the world’s first aircraft to be propelled solely by a liquid-fuelled rocket, making its first powered flight on July 20 1939 with Erich Warsitz at the controls.
It was a private venture by the Heinkel company in accordance with director Ernst Heinkel's emphasis on developing technology for high-speed flight.
Heinkel enthusiastically supported their efforts, supplying a Heinkel He 72 and later two Heinkel He 112s for the experiments.

Heinkel He 343 Luft '46 Entry
In January 1944, Heinkel was persuaded by Oberstleutnant Knemeyer to begin work on a four-engined jet bomber, that could be ready in the quickest possible time frame.
Although Heinkel had been working on a similar project (P.1068), it was decided to take a proven design (Arado Ar 234) and enlarge the dimensions.
Professor Heinkel went so far as to write a very opinionated letter to the RLM, touting the 343's quicker development time, lower material cost and basic simplicity, but it was to no avail.

For several years, the airplane was stored at Heinkel’s Rostock-Marienehe factory, but eventually it was shipped to the Berlin Air Museum, where it was destroyed in a bombing attack in 1944.

In 1940 Heinkel made a proposal to the german government for a twin-engine heavy fighter that could be adopted for torpedo bombing and/or for medium bomber duties.
The result was that Heinkel was asked to redesign it's heavy fighter for a dedicated night-fighter type.
Because the plans were already in an advanced stage, Heinkel could start building a prototype almost immediately, but ironically enough was set back considerably when an RAF bombing raid destroyed most of the completed drawings.

Heinkel improved the design and two were built as HD-16s and shipped to Sweden for trials and modifications in 1928.
The aircraft as such did not amount to much and never saw combat but they did allow for Heinkel to gain experience in launching torpedoes from aircraft and this led the development of the He-115 in 1938.
In 1939 twelve Heinkel He-115 A-2 aircraft were delivered to Sweden and six more were delivered to Norway before the outbreak of World War 2.

Heinkel’s He-177 Greif had more than enough range, a good (theoretical) payload and decent high-altitude performance.
Unfortunately, the Greif had suffered a disastrous ground attack career, plagued as it was by overheating engines; it was hoped that the colder air at its highest operating altitude of about 27,000 ft could help to combat this heating.
It was after the third trial that Heinkel engineers proposed the inclusion of additional anti-bomber weapons to the 177’s platform; using an entire Greif just to launch a single Natter did not sit well with the very pragmatic design staff.
