  The Heinkel He-162 Volksjaeger
Their Volksjaeger concept was a neat, sporty-looking little aircraft, with a sleek streamlined fuselage; the BMW-003 engine carried in a nacelle on the back of the aircraft; twin tailfins, to clear the jet exhaust; a high-mounted straight wing with a shallow dihedral; and tricycle landing gear that retracted into the fuselage.
Final assembly was to be at the Heinkel plant in Marienhe, the Junkers plant at Bernberg, and in the infamous SS underground slave-labor factory near Nordhausen in the Harz Mountains, known as "Mittelwerk (Central Works)".
Heinkel also built two prototypes of the "He-162S" tandem-seat training glider, in accordance with the lunatic scheme to provide pilots for the fighter using Hitler Youth.

It was inspired by Ernst Heinkel's emphasis on research into high-speed flight and built on the company's experience with the He 178 jet prototype.
With the HeS 011 not expected for some time, Heinkel was forced to accept that they would have to use a competitor's engines, and selected the BMW 003.
Heinkel was ordered to abandon the He 280 and focus attention on bomber construction, something he remained bitter about until his death.

Ohain approached Ernst Heinkel, one of the larger aircraft industrialists of the day, who immediately saw the promise of the design.
Heinkel had recently purchased the Hirth engine company, and Ohain and his master machinist Max Hahn were set up there as a new division of the Hirth company.
Their subsequent designs culminated in the HeS 3 of 1,100 lb (5 kN), which was fitted to Heinkel's simple He 178 airframe and flew in August 1939, an impressively short time for development.

Notable Heinkel aircraft of World War II include the He 111, originally designed as a civilian airliner but adapted almost immediately as a medium bomber.
It was used extensively in air raids over England 1940, but was found to be vulnerable to attack and so was redeployed as a night bomber and mine-layer.

Heinkel HeS 3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The HeS 3 was the world's first operational jet engine to power an aircraft.
In some ways the HeS 3 design was simply a cleanup of the original HeS 1, converted to burn liquid fuel instead of the HeS 1's hydrogen gas.
The first HeS 3 design was generally similar to the HeS 1, using a 16-bladed centrifugal compressor supported by an 8-blade impeller to smooth out the airflow in the intake.

Info about the Heinkel He-162 Salamander Volksjager German Jet Fighter
One of the first proposals to meet this requirement was the Heinkel He-P 1073, which was a turbojet fighter project to be powered by an HeS 011.
Since Heinkel was already evolved a similar project some months earlier, a design proposal was quickly drafted and submitted to the Technical Office within a matter of days.
When the first prototype took to the air from Heinkel's field at ViennaSchwechat, a structural failure was revealed (due to the breakage of one of the covers of the landing gear housing) probably caused by a welding error.

Of interest is that the He 162 was in fact based on an earlier Heinkel design for the P.1073 jet fighter project.
Heinkel essentially modified the basic P.1073 design to create the He 162.
It was originally intended to use the BMW 003E engine on the He 162's, but shortages of these engines at this stage of the war forced the design teams to seek out alternative power plants.

The HeS 011 was designed for a thrust output of 1600 kp, by the end of the second world war the thrust output was 1300 kp.

Heinkel, always interested in high speed aircraft, sponsored quite early the turbojet development of von Ohain and had because of this advantage the first experimental turbojet plane (He178) in flight.
The german ministry of aviation (RLM) was quite upset of Heinkel´s private initiative and set up its own turbojet program, favoring competitors (that were´nt so far advanced) concerning both engine and airframe development (BMW, Jumo and Messerschmidt).
This had as major result that the He S8 hadn´t enough development priority, and that´s why the heavier but stronger Jumo109-004 and BMW109-003 engines and the Me262 fighter (by far not as maneuvrable as the He280, which outmaneuvred a Fw190 in a mock dogfight, and in 1941 with conventional wings and landing gear).

Ernst Heinkel gave the go-ahead to develop a flight-test engine, designated the "HeS-3", which was strapped to an He-118 dive bomber for evaluation.
Following the flight tests of the He-178, in the fall of 1939 Heinkel began serious development of an operational fighter, the "He-280", which was to be powered by twin improved Heinkel engines.
