Goebel thus decided to emigrate to America where, in the 'country of unlimited possibilities', he would be able to use the workface and the versatile technical abilities to full effect.
There was a lot of excitement and attention when, a few years after his arrival in New York, Heinrich Goebel attached an arc shaped lamp on the roof of his house which was powered by a battery produced from zinc and carbon elements.
Heinrich Goebel died on the fourth of December, 1893.

The 'bulb' is the glass enclosure which keeps the filament in a vacuum or low-pressure noble gas (or halogen gas in the case of quartz-halogen lamps: see below).
The invention of the light bulb is sometimes attributed to Thomas Alva Edison, but today it is well-known that Heinrich Goebel built functional bulbs three decades earlier.
In 1854, the German inventor Heinrich Goebel developed the first 'modern' light bulb: a carbonized bamboo filament, in a vacuum bottle to prevent oxidation.

 Thomas Edison Biography
Edison's placement has been criticized as misunderstood patriotism, since even during his lifetime there were non-US inventors whose inventions (combustion engines, cars, electricity-making machines, etc.) are believed by some to have had greater impact than Edison's, despite Edison's marked genius in his creations.
For example, Edison did not invent the electric lightbulb, which was pioneered by Heinrich Goebel in 1854.
Goebel's lamps lasted up to 400 hours, but he did not patent them.

It is widely regarded that Thomas Alva Edison invented the first reasonably practical incandescent lamp, using a carbon filament in a bulb containing a vacuum.
There were earlier incandescent lamps, such as one by Heinrich Goebel made with a carbon filament in 1854.
Joseph Wilson Swan began trying to make carbon-based incandescent lamps in 1850 and made one in 1860 that was workable except for excessively short life due to poor vacuum.
