Heinrich Ignaz Biber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber (August 12, 1644 – May 3, 1704) was a Bohemian-Austrian composer and violinist.
The music of Biber has enjoyed a renaissance, in part, because of "The Rosary Sonatas." This remarkable set of 15 sonatas is also known as "The Mystery Sonatas" (for key events in the lives of the Virgin Mary and Christ) and "The Copper-Engraving Sonatas" (for the engravings at the head of the sonatas).
Biber wrote much choral and chamber music, concerti, operas and a number of more well-known pieces such as the "Nightwatchman" Serenade and "Harmonia Artificiosa." A work which is currently attributed to him (formerly it was attributed to Orazio Benevoli) is the Missa Salisburgensis, an astonishing polyphonic setting of the mass for 53 independent voices.

Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was one of the seventeenth century’s most individual composers for violin.
Partly, this is because Biber excels in variations - the Aria and Variations, which appear in many of the sonatas, and the passacaglias of the 6th and unpublished E major sonata.
Biber’s variations recall those of Buxtehude for harpsichord - seemingly simple in melody, they nevertheless become complex in overall emotion and structure.

San Francisco Bach Choir: Heinrich Franz Biber
Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber was the outstanding violin virtuoso of the 17th century, and composed violin sonatas that are still very much in the repertoire.
Biber started his career in central Moravia, and during the winter of 1670-71, he became a member of the chapel at the Salzberg court where he eventually became Kapellmeister.
In his sacred music, Biber was capable of writing a cappella masses as well as huge concerted works for solo and ripieno voices with large orchestra.

Violinist Andrew Manze is certainly allied with Biber's style, revelling in the chance to be adventurous with the composer's blessings.
Biber stole the music's theme from a similarly titled work from his contemporary Heinrich Schmelzer, except that while the latter composed it for a trio, Biber the virtuoso decided to let the violin play doublestops for the same effect on the score.

The Mass itself is for large forces—two vocal choirs, a wind choir of trumpets, cornetti, and trombones, and a choir of strings—all deployed in a rich antiphonal array.
Reflecting Biber’s status as a great violin virtuoso, the instrumental parts are prominent here with extended interludes and also in counterpoint with the voice, as in the compellingly intertwined writing of the Benedictus.
Biber’s sonatas are well represented here, but perhaps the best of the lot is that by Heinrich Schmelzer, the twelfth sonata from his 1662 Sacro-profanus concentus musicus.

The Bohemian virtuoso violinist and composer Heinrich Biber spent the last 24 years of his life at the court of the Archbishop of Salzburg, after earlier service with the Prince-Bishop of Olmutz.
Among a number of interesting compositions are Biber's fifteen Rosary Sonatas, for violin and basso continuo, with its unaccompanied violin Passacaglia, and the curious string orchestra Battalia (Battle), with its imitation gunfire and drunken soldiers.
In the first he makes considerable use of scordatura, with the violin retuned to provide different sonorities and unusual chordal effects.
