However, many years before, in August 1821, Kuhl and van Hasselt, two young biologist working for The Netherlands Commission for Natural Sciences, had written letters describing how they had followed rhinoceros tracks to the summit.
Unfortunately, Heinrich Kuhl and Johan van Hasselt could not be consulted, as both had died prematurely, in Buitenzorg - aged 24 and 26 respectively - of tropical diseases.

Their Latin name, Oceanites oceanicus, goes back to the Greek for "sea nymph." This bird was first classified and named by Heinrich Kuhl, an amazing German zoologist from the early 1800s.
Although he died too soon at the age of 24, he published ornithology's first study on petrels and in a strange parallel, another on bats.

The National Museum of Natural History “Naturalis” in Leiden, the Netherlands, has two mounted skins of Javan tigers, one skeleton and ten skulls.
The first skin (young female) was obtained in 1820 or 1821 in western Java by three of the first Dutch zoologists to explore the Netherlands East Indies (nowadays Indonesia), namely Heinrich Kuhl, Johan Christiaan van Hasselt and Gerrit van Raalten.
Heinrich Kuhl and Jahan Christiaan van Hasslt collected the skeleton too.

Boie himself, who was appointed to the Commission and sent out to the Dutch East Indies to replace Kuhl, died in Bogor in 1827.

Pieter Bleeker acquired some drawings of fishes in Batavia (now Jakarta) that had been prepared for the naturalists Heinrich Kuhl and Jan Coenraad van Hasselt, who collected fishes in Java in 1821-1823 (Boeseman, 1997).
It seems likely that Kuhl and van Hasselt would have collected a small goby like this near shore.
The fish that we here identify as Gnatholepis anjerensis is one of the two most common species of the genus found in the East Indian area and the one most often taken in shallow water such as tide pools or along a mangrove shore.
