Heinrich von Kleist - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bernd Heinrich Wilhelm von Kleist (October 18, 1777 – November 21, 1811) was a German poet, dramatist and novelist.
Kleist was born at Frankfurt (Oder), and after a scanty education, he entered the Prussian army in 1792, served in the Rhine campaign of 1796 and retired from the service in 1799 with the rank of lieutenant.
In the autumn of 1802 Kleist returned to Germany; he visited Goethe, Schiller and Wieland in Weimar, stayed for a while in Leipzig and Dresden, again proceeded to Paris, and returning in 1804 to his post in Berlin was transferred to the Domänenkammer (department for the administration of crown lands) at Königsberg.

 Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811)
Only much later did it become clear that HEINRICH VON KLEIST, while he was aiming to unite the art of Aeschylus and Shakespeare, was on the way to a new and national drama in harmony with the spirit of the age.
Kleist chose the popular form of the drama of chivalry and by a revision met the requirements of the stage better than he had done before.
Kleist does not make his prince despise death like the ordinary heroes of tragedy; on the contrary, he trembles so violently in its presence that everything else in comparison with mere existence seems as nothing.

On the Marionette Theatre by Heinrich von Kleist
Kleist's work was dominated by the tension between his inner certainty of the validity of the human soul life and the apparent impossibility of discovering meaning in outer existence.
Kleist's essay pivots around a reference to the third chapter of the book of Genesis, the story of the Fall of Man, the discovery of that self-consciousness which establishes and perpetuates human isolation.
Kleist shares with Kafka (who once claimed he understood the Fall of Man better than anyone else) the insight that it is only our concept of time which makes us think of the Fall of Man as a historical event in the distant past.

little blue light - Heinrich von Kleist
Kleist was born October 18, 1777 into a family of stalwart Prussian soldiers that had little history of, or tolerance with, the intellectual, creative and melancholic temperament characteristic of Heinrich.
Kleist's personal belief in reason suffered a devastating blow when he encountered the works of Kant, who contends that man, unable to know the true nature of things even with the power of reason, is left to rely only on appearances in the world.
Kleist was rediscovered with the rise of Naturalism in literature in the 1880's and was considered a major figure in German literature by the early 20th century.

Kleist emerges from the hands of critics and biographers as a complex and dynamic figure, at once a romantic, realist, Rousseauist, Prussian nationalist, social critic, existentialist, and more recently, modernist.
Kleist's personal associations are marked by similar ambiguities: fervent though physically unconsummated attachments to several women and close, turbulent relationships with male companions.
Unsuccessful in his quest, Kleist was plagued by moral and emotional upheavals, including the famous "Kant crisis," which undermined his faith in truth and knowledge and inaugurated a period of despondency and personal anguish.

Literary Encyclopedia: Heinrich von Kleist   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Now recognized as the most “modern” and most performed German classical dramatist and as the author of eight narrative masterpieces, Heinrich von Kleist never saw any of his plays on stage and achieved notoriety throughout most of the 19th century primarily for his scandalous suicide.
Although the Kleists had provided several generals for the Prussian army including Heinrich’s father, Joachim Friedrich, company commander in Frankfurt an der Oder, they also bore evidence of conflicting artistic aspirations as exemplified in Ewald von Kleist (1715-1759), the author of some idyllic poems, who was required to enter the military against his will.
When Kleist was only eleven years old, his father died, leaving his young widow, Juliane Ulrike, née von Pannwitz, with two children by her husband’s first marriage and five offspring of her own.

Kleist's convoluted syntax --- practically every sentence describes a long sequence of improbable coincidences leading up to some crucial, often ironical plot twist --- makes his narratives sound like court transcripts that have been written by the moving finger of Fate.
Die Marquise von O, by contrast, depicts the sufferings of a truly innocent heroine who is falsely convicted (in the eyes of her family and the society she lives in) of having engaged in an immoral sex act on the basis of deceiving circumstantial evidence.
Kleist argues for importance of going on instinct when judging a person, frequently seen to be the right course of action in The Fugitive.

The bear stood, to my amazement, on his hind legs, his back leaning against a stake to which he was chained, with his right paw raised ready for combat, and looked me in the eye: this was his fencing position.
Now I found myself in almost the same circumstance as the young Herr von G. The single-mindedness of the bear served to reduce my self-assurance; as thrusts and feints followed each other, I was dripping with perspiration.

The all too brief sketch of Kleist’s life and work is poorly organized, seems to focus on the nonessential, and leaves out aspects deemed important in recent research, such as, for example, Kleist’s troubled sexuality or sexual identity.

Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) was virtually forgotten until the beginning of the twentieth century, when Rilke, Kafka, and Thomas Mann hailed him as a master of German prose and European dramatic literature.
During Kleist's lifetime, Goethe, sensing in the younger man his greatest rival, carefully withheld from him the endorsement that would have established his reputation.
At the age of thirty-four, impoverished and in debt, despairing of the literary honor he had hoped to gain for his family, Kleist consummated a suicide pact with an incurably ill married woman.

The fascinating and controversial German writer of dramas and novellas Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) is one of the most interesting objects of analysis for scholars of German literature even today, nearly two centuries after his death by suicide.
In recent years, disagreements among Kleist scholars have been so extreme that some have suggested that his work subverts the very process of interpretation.
Allan holds that the perspective endorsed by the Kleistian narrator is designed to reflect the assumptions and prejudices of the members of the dominant class of Kleist's time (authoritarian and male-dominated as it was), and finds that by the end of the stories it is precisely this perspective that has been profoundly called into question.
