Auerswald tried to obtain maximum production from forced Jewish labor in the ghetto.
He was investigated by German legal authorities in the 1960's but was not charged.

In May 1941 a lawyer from Berlin Heinz Auerswald was appointed Kommissar of the Jewish quarter on behalf of the German authorities.
Auerswald was in almost daily contact with Czerniakow, whilst every Saturday Czerniakow and Szerynski reported to Brandt and Mende at Szucha Avenue on ghetto matters.
During 1940 approximately 11,000 Jews were sent to labour camps in Warsaw, Lublin and Krakow, some were taken to Belzec labour camps, building fortifications on the soviet border.

In Auerswald’s first meeting with the head of the Warsaw Jewish Council, the 33-year old lawyer assured Adam Czerniakow that “his attitude to the Council was objective and matter of fact, without animosity.”
When Nazi policy switched from expulsion to mass murder, the role of the ghetto switched from urban internment camp to a staging ground for deportations to the death camps.
In the spring of 1942, he was in frequent contact with the commandant at Chelmno to ensure the recovery of the valuables and clothing of the murdered Jews for his economic operations in Lodz.

In May 1941 a Berlin attorney, named Heinz Auerswald, was appointed Kommissar of the Jewish quarter on behalf of the German authorities.
Auerswald's appointment over the Jewish quarter was parallel to that of Ludwig Leist, who was the commander of the entire city.
Auerswald's office also assumed control of the Transferstelle and managed the Jewish affairs.

Heinz Auerswald, Kommissar (Commissioner) of the ghetto, complained to Czerniakow that Judenrat officials stood too close when they spoke to him.
Auerswald even released Czerniakow from the obligation to wear an armband, and allowed the Judenrat Chairman to address him in a surprisingly frank manner.
On hearing that Auerswald had been summoned to Berlin on 19 January 1942, Czerniakow's concern increased: “I cannot shake off the fearful suspicion that the Jews of Warsaw may be threatened by mass resettlement.” Although Auerswald did not attend, the Wannsee Conference took place the next day.
