Heinz then discovered that the grocers he had been supplying were unwilling to extend credit even to feed his family.
Through the Howard Heinz era, as in that of his father, all growth was internal; even overseas ventures were built from scratch.

Heinz, or Heinz Burt as he was known in the Tornados, was not only a prodigious talent, but a highly consistent recording artist.
Heinz' producer on these sides was the legendary Joe Meek, and his signature attributes — flashy keyboards and guitar, all very compressed — can be found on much of it, but unlike a lot of other extended bodies of Meek's recordings, this body of music is highly listenable, track after track.

Heinz, as he was billed, was a protégé of the paranoid, and finally homicidal, record producer Joe Meek.
Meek envisaged Heinz's audience as teenage girls, but he was confronted with sceptical male youth and booed on and off stage.

Over the next couple years he had several other Top 30 hits, including "Country Boy," "You Were There," "Questions I Can't Answer," and "Diggin' My Potatoes." A lad with an awkward smile and shocking blond pompadour, Heinz couldn't sing well and his songs were usually exceptionally dippy and trivial even for the time, albeit catchy.
The material is elevated, however, by Meek's relentlessly imaginative production -- ghostly choruses, stomping orchestras, and shudderingly compressed sound -- and some remarkable lead guitar playing by sessionmen including Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, and much lesser known but quite talented players like Barry Tomlinson.
On occasion, Heinz did get hold of tough rock tunes like "Big Bad Spider" and "I'm Not a Bad Guy," featuring blazing guitar leads that rank among the most unsung instrumental rock performances of the period.
