Werner Karl Heisenberg (December 5, 1901 – February 1, 1976) was a celebrated German physicist and Nobel laureate, one of the founders of quantum mechanics.
In 1957 Heisenberg together with Otto Hahn, Max von Laue, Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker and Max Born formulated and signed a protest against nuclear arming of the German Armed Forces and world-wide nuclear armaments, the so-called "Göttingen Declaration of the German Nuclear Physicists".
In it, an angry Bohr relates that Heisenberg, in their 1941 conversation, did not express any moral problems with the bomb making project, that Heisenberg had spent the past two years working almost exclusively on it, and that he was convinced that the atomic bomb would eventually decide the war.

In quantum physics, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle or the Heisenberg indeterminacy principle — the latter name given to it by Niels Bohr — states that one cannot measure values (with arbitrary precision) of certain conjugate quantities, which are pairs of observables of a single elementary particle.
However, Heisenberg showed that, even in theory with a hypothetical infinitely precise instrument, no measurement could be made to arbitrary accuracy of both the position and the momentum of a physical object.
In 1927, to develop the standard deviation for the uncertainty principle, Heisenberg took the gaussian distribution or bell curve for the imprecision in the measurement of the position q of a moving electron to the corresponding bell curve of the measured momentum p.

This appears to be a suppliment to Heisenberg compensator, but doesnt appear to have ever been references in Trek.
The Heisenberg principle states that the uncertainty associated with measuring position (dx) and the uncertainty associated with measuring momentum (dp) obey the relation dp*dx >= 1/2, (where I have let Planck's constant h-bar = 1).
A Replicator, on the other hand, requires a lower (molecular) resolution and therefore Heisenberg compensators are not necessary.

To dumb it down(IIRC), Heisenberg stated that on the quantum level, you could observe or predict either the location or the movement of any molecule but you couldn't predict either.
When I first heard about the compensators, I thought that a way they could 'work' would be to use particles significantly smaller than quanta to make their readings...

Actually, you don't need a "Heisenberg Compensator" to teleport something: very clever scientists have already figured out a way to teleport particles and photons have already been teleported (alternate explanation).
Cloning would be done by this method, reducing the transcription errors that were a problem in "Up the Long Ladder." And there wouldn't be as many complaints about the difference in taste between replicated food and natural food.
It is not Heisenberg type uncertainty that was "circumvented," but Schroedenger type uncertainty that was "collapsed." It is very hard to describe quantum effects in a language developed to describe macroscopic observance of Newtonian effects, but the math does seem to work out.

Other terms like "plasma conduit", "pattern buffer", "phase transition coil", "impulse engine", and "power coupling" are sprinkled throughout Star Trek, and can be easily interpreted to be meaningful in the context of their observed function on the show.
