  Heist (2001) Movie Review
(Are there any other type of aging thieves in heist films?) Danny DeVito is terrific as a back-stabbing fence who is forcing his hand by withholding the spoils from Hackman and his gang's last job.
The plot is a tiny bit tired though, the dealings and double-dealings have a bit of a "been there done that" feel to them.
Heist is minor league Mamet, but even small-time Mamet blows most of the competition out of the water.

Heist is a pleasure to watch, and the greatest pleasure is to watch Mr.
As a movie, Heist is merely an amiable time-killer.
With a movie like this, there's no risk of spoiling the ending, because the entire plot is merely a formality trudging toward a foregone conclusion.

"Heist" is actually a pretty good caper movie with a little bit of con artistry thrown in.

“Heist” is one of those thief-dramas that takes itself overly seriously and relies heavily on its style and dialogue.
There is some clever humor and ranting but for the first half of the film it’s like watching a glob of molasses droop out of a measuring cup as you pour.

Heist, The (2001). Movie reviews by Dr. Edwin Jahiel.
What is a constant, within this movie and in other films by Mamet is Mametspeak, the colorful vocabulary used by this writer's underworld creatures and most probably not used by real-life bad 'uns.
The second heist is, I am tempted to say, a post-modern affair, immensely complex, surrounded by changing alliances, including both time-honored clichés of the genre as well as novelties.
This movie is something of a fantasy, more feisty than heisty.

Heist (2001), written and directed by David Mamet, certainly involves a lot of criminal activity, if you couldn't tell that from the title.
With regards to Heist, it's very difficult to tell if what's happening is for real or a part of some elaborate plan designed to put other events into motion.
Like many movies of its genre, Heist sports the basic plot of planning the biggest theft of the century, a con, and the dilemma of getting away with it.

While I was watching Heist, I immediately was drawn to its similarity with another film that came out this year, The Score.
Mamet takes this rule and turns it on his head; his dialogue is characteristically uncharacteristic, drawing attention to itself with its rapid-paced beat and plethora of clever catchphrases.
Heist is a smartly-written and well-executed thriller, which is more than can be said for most of the thrillers out there nowadays (The Score excepted, of course)

Hackman may be sleepwalking through the role but he is still capable of dominating a screen in a way few of his contemporaries have been able to emulate.
As with all such movies (Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven being a prime example), the real joy comes in the planning and execution of the heist itself and the conflict between the prime movers.
Heist certainly has more than its fair share of twists and turns and is full of bluff, deception and double-crossing, keeping the viewer more than a little hooked right to the end.

It's also beneficial to the movie to have a decent cast.
Although John Travolta is the lead character in this film and was paid more than Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry combined to star in it, his presence in the movie was hardly advertised so as not to turn off people from watching it.
