Hel (666) experienced a period of growth, but was later left behind by the faster growing city of Gdańsk.
During the Polish Defence War of 1939 the Hel Peninsula was one of the longest-defended pockets of Polish Army resistance.
Hel houses a sea life biological laboratory and there are interesting examples of naval armament and equipment exhibited throughout the town.

Early in the morning of September 3, 1939, two German destroyers, the Wolfgang Zenker and Leberecht Maas, attempted to bombard the Polish Naval base at Hel, and came under fire from the destroyer Wicher, the minelayer Gryf, and a shore battery consisting of 4 152 mm guns.
The Gryf sustained some minor damage, but both German destroyers were damaged forced to withdraw.
