Helcar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Helcar (also spelt Helkar) was raised by the Valar (some traditions say by Melkor) to house the northern of the Two Lamps, Illuin.
In some traditions it was said Helcar was made by Melkor out of ice, a substance not yet known to the Valar.
The heat of Illuin then melted Helcar, and the meltwater of this tower formed the Sea of Helcar.

Sea of Helkar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien, the Sea of Helkar (also spelt Helcar) was a great inland sea which existed during the First Age.
Due to Melkor's deceit these were destroyed, and where Helcar, the northern Lamp had stood a great inland sea was formed, which was named the Sea of Helkar after the tower on which the northern lamp had stood.
In The Atlas of Middle-earth, Karen Wynn Fonstad assumed that the lands of Mordor, Khand, and Rhûn lay where the Sea of Helcar had been, and that the Sea of Rhûn and Sea of Núrnen were its remnants.

Cuiviénen - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Its name (cuiviër+nen) means 'water of awakening,' and it is said to have been on the shore of a large gulf in the inland Sea of Helcar in the far east of Middle-earth.
The Awakening of the Elves took place in very ancient times, during the Years of the Trees, and Cuiviénen is known to have been destroyed (perhaps by natural forces) since then.
It is unknown how long the Avari remained at Cuiviénen during the First Age, but it is certain that the Sea of Helcar ceased to exist after the War of Wrath, so "to Cuiviénen there is no returning".

Great Gulf (Middle-earth) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gulf started at the southern end of Beleriand, and from there flowed east all the way to where later was south Gondor, where a narrow strip of land separated it from the Sea of Helcar.
North of the Great Gulf lay the lands of Beleriand and Eriador, south of it lay those lands which later would be known as Far Harad.
After the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age, the Great Gulf drained the Sea of Helcar and effectively disappeared itself, because much of Middle-earth was drowned.

Helcar was implied to be huge in the various "Quenta" texts, as the Bay of Cuivienen was only a small portion of it.
However, the passage which reads "in the changes of the world the shapes of lands and of seas have been broken and remade; rivers have not kept their course, neither have mountains remained steadfast; and to Cuivienen there is no returning" implies that Cuivienen no longer exists.
It is a simple inference, although not in itself a conclusive one, that a remnant of Helcar became the Inland Sea of Rhun, and that some substantial change occurred at an undisclosed period of time.

 Wikipedia: Mordor
During the First Age of Middle-earth, Mordor did not exist.
In its location lay the great inland Sea of Helcar.
During the War of Wrath that marked the end of the First Age, the Sea of Helcar was drained through the Great Gulf, and volcanic activity raised the plateaus of Mordor, Khand, and Rhûn from the former seabed.

The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum - Mountains of Mordor
I have thought that were once the coasts of the Inland Sea of Helcar, but the coast line and the mountains don't match up.
But if the effects on the plate(s) underneath the Sea of Helcar were so powerful, then the rest of Middle-earth would have also been changed, and we don't have any sources stating that.
Therefore, by the more proper, historical "First Age", and the eastward passing of the Edain and Druedain, the Sea of Helcar was plausibly quite well drained by a combination of uplifting, widening of its outlet to Belgaer, and expansion of ice caps, and Mordor has largely appeared.

Oromë led the Elves of the Great Journey around the northern end of this sea as they set out for Valinor.
The only maps to show Helcar are early ones, and they tend to place it rather nearer the centre of the World than to the north.
However, the text of The Silmarillion states that '...that sea stood where aforetime the roots of the mountain of Illuin had been...' (Quenta Silmarillion 3), and that Illuin was raised '...near to the north of Middle-earth' ibid 1), so Tolkien's conception seems to have changed over time.

Born to a minor noble of Gondor, and once holding another name, the lord now known as Amrûndil set off for the wild lands of the East several years before the War of the Ring, leaving nothing more than a brief letter of farewell to his family.
After some time spent wandering far in foreign lands, Amrûndil built a small home near the inland Sea of Helcar and settled there.
From the start the town was named Ashford, for its location on the banks of a large but fordable stream, whose waters were often darkened by the ashes of nearby forests - burned by the native Easterling farmers to clear the land for growing food.

Christopher Tolkien was puzzled by this placement, since "Lay of the Children of Hurin" speaks of the "heats of the South", but it does seem logical that -- if Dorwinion is an Elven land -- it be placed somewhere near the path followed by the Elves on their westward journeys.
They all seem to have wandered along the northern shores of whatever sea lay in the region (the old sea, Helcar, vanished in the turmoils at the end of the First Age, and all that remained of it was the sea of Rhun).
Without a more double checking I am hesitant to say that all references above were really JRRT's last thoughts on any given point, but they at least collect together alot of the more obscure points of Elven history and geographical locations [at one time at least] of some of the Avari/Silvan Elves.
