Heldenplatz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Heldenplatz ("Heroes' Square") is a historical plaza in Vienna.
The Heldenplatz is the outer plaza of the Hofburg and was built under the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph, as part of what was to become the Kaiserforum (imperial forum), which, however, was never completed.
In the northeast, it is bordered by the Leopoldinian Tract of the Hofburg, in the southeast by the Neue Hofburg, and in the southwest by the Ringstraße, from which it is separated by the Äußeres Burgtor ("outer castle gate").

Heldenplatz was Bernhard’s last play, the play that probably killed him (he died three months into its stage run, finally succumbing to a serious heart condition that could not withstand the scandal he himself had initiated).
Heldenplatz premiered under tight police security on 4 November 1988, fifty years after the Anschluss, and fifty years almost to the day after Kristallnacht (9 November 1938) for which Vienna has a particularly despicable record.
It was at Heldenplatz that the crowds gathered in 1934 to mourn the assassination of their right-wing chancellor, Engelbert Dollfuss.

Dr. Peter Stachel (KKT der ÖAW) – The "Heldenplatz" as an Austrian Place of Memory
The fact that the Heldenplatz as a large square in the centre of the city, was best suited to the purpose for entirely practical reasons, undoubtedly played a part, but this huge, centrally placed complex originated already thanks to the aim of a conscious symbolic representation of the old Habsburg state.
The Hofburg (castle), to the area of which the Heldenplatz belongs, was not originally built as a splendid residence, but as part of the city's fortifications, and its interior was so small that guests of the emperor usually had to be accommodated in neighbouring town houses.

 Literary Encyclopedia: Heldenplatz
It is significant that the première of Heldenplatz practically coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the so-called “Kristallnacht”, the Nazi pogrom on 9/10 November 1938 during which throughout Germany and Austria synagogues were burnt, cemeteries desecrated and tens of thousands of Jewish citizens brutalized and arrested.
Equally significant is the play’s setting near and around Heldenplatz (Heroes’ Square), the very square where Hitler was greeted by jubilant masses when he arrived in Vienna on 15 March 1938.
Heldenplatz and the Burgtheater are situated at opposite ends of the Volksgarten park.

The crowds were cheering for him at Heldenplatz which from this time on became a symbol for collaboration with the III.

In the gigantic new Heldenplatz Hitler envisioned "an ideal spot for mass marches," where the marchers would "feel a great, monumental impression." In fact, these ideas for the Heldenplatz were not Hitler’s own.
