Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter also known as "Doc" or "AP" was born in Maces Springs and in 1914 he brought his sixteen year old bride Sara Dougherty Carter to live there.
Route 614 is now called the AP Carter Highway and two of AP and Sara's children, Joe (now deceased, 2005) and Janette, have opened a music hall called "The Carter Fold" on the Clinch Mountain side of the road.
In March, 1943, when the Carter Family trio stopped recording together after the WBT contract, Maybelle Carter, with encouragement from her husband Ezra, formed Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters with her daughters Helen Carter, Anita Carter, and June.

Appalachian music was nothing new back in 1927 but the only way you could hear it was on the front porches of the mountain cabins or at the dances and get-togethers the people had so they could cut loose and relax from the hard working lives they led.
The Carters had recorded upwards of 350 songs in their career and had created a musical influence far more extensive than anyone ever imagined.
They were billed as “Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters.” Then, in about 1952, A. and Sara decided to put the group back together with their own offspring and do a special concert in Maces Spring.

The Carter Family had ruled country music during the 1930s, but broke up in 1943 after patriarch A.P. Carter and his ex-wife Sara decided to retire.
Sara's cousin Maybelle, the third member of the Carters, re-formed the group the same year -- as Mother Maybelle & the Carter Sisters -- with her daughters Helen, June, and Anita.
The Carters performed on radio from Virginia, Tennessee, and Missouri during the late '40s, but moved to the Grand Ole Opry in 1950.
