Donath was in exceptional voice from the start, and displayed astonishing dynamic range and control (her ability to crescendo and decrescendo- sometimes both- while masterfully shaping legato phrases took our- not her- breath away).
Donath's art, she renders them with a sunny humor which seems part of her character and, let it be said, without the grotesque distortions of tone and musical line that characterize the work of the most famous recorded interpretr of such pieces.
Donath asked one student to practise her song purely on vowels, and two of them to add broad arm movements to unleash the breath, stressing the need for flexibility and ingenuity in preparation, in making a song one's own.

Helen Donath Recital in San Diego
Presented as the first event of the San Diego Opera's 1998-99 International Season, "An Intimate Evening of Opera and Song" with soprano Donath and her husband, Claus Donath, at the piano, was held in Sherwood Auditorium at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla.
The Puccini arias were extremely fine, though Donath encountered some difficulty in the opening descending phrases of "Un bel di." She really opened up in the operetta selections, the voice sounding larger and more secure at every moment.
Donath finished off with some really first-class Wagner singing.

Helen Donath turns in a memorable performance, dolorous and resigned, yet free of gooey sentimentality.
Although Donath’s pear-shaped tones are often lovely, she doesn’t float her high notes as many Marschallins do to underscore the character’s poignancy.

Donath and the MSO will present the premiere performance of the DiChiera work, written in 1965 for voice and piano, in a setting for voice and orchestra by composer Steven Mercurio, commissioned by the MSO.
Based on the texts of the songs, which come from Millay's collections of 1917 and 1922, the work is intensely emotional, suffused with a spirit of living on the edge, shaded with nostalgia and love's regrets.
Donath has performed the songs many times in their piano version.

The world of opera loves the idea of a Texan," said Helen Donath, a soprano of international reputation who can nevertheless sound like a reject from "Heehaw Honeys" at the drop of a hat.
Donath's latest stop, as headliner in the Hawaii Opera Theatre's annual benefit recital on Sunday, represents a departure of sorts, even for her.
Without embellishing at all, it seems reasonable to suggest that the Donaths have one of the more satisfying marital relationships in the opera world, a 35-year partnership that rarely sees the couple apart for more than a few weeks at a time.

 MSO: Helen Donath, Soprano
Everyone not present at the Oscar Mayer Theater Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon to see and hear Madison Symphony Orchestra's concert with soprano Helen Donath missed what I thought was the best playing ever achieved by that ensemble, as well as a voice of incredible beauty commanded by a truly world-class musician.
Though the dryness of the hall caused Donath to be a little careful of her instrument Saturday, for the Sunday performance she let the full range of her wonderfully controlled, bright, and unerringly accurate voice be heard.
Here Donath exuded extraordinary youthfulness in her voice and uplifting hope in her interpretation, with a sound that melded perfectly with the instrumental ensemble.

With soprano Helen Donath we have the opposite problem to Tuller's - the harpsichord in her recitative is not as distracting, but there is an edginess to her voice that makes listening a challenge.
The recitative that follows acts as a balm as alto Helen Watts sings "Now heaven's sweet delight … / To joyfulness doth Jesus pow'r transport," and this mood is heightened with Adalbert Kraus's aria.
Both these singers handle their parts well but are overshadowed by bass Philippe Hunterlocher in his recitative and aria, singing with strength, full tone and considerable sensitivity to the text.
