The Private Life of Helen of Troy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Private Life of Helen of Troy was a 1927 silent film about Helen of Troy based on a novel by John Erskine.
The film was directed by Alexander Korda and starred Maria Corda as Helen, Lewis Stone as Menelaus, and Ricardo Cortez as Paris.
That same year, the first "talkie," The Jazz Singer, received an honorary award for introducing sound to film, and the category for which The Private Life of Helen of Troy was nominated was dropped by the second Academy Awards.

 About Helen of Troy
Paradoxically the concern to elevate Helen from the realm of sordid anecdote and restore her to an epic role, was to have the effect of casting doubt on the epic itself.
Since it was vital that beautiful Helen should be virtuous, it was claimed that she had never been in Troy, that Zeus had put a phantom in her place or that a king of Egypt had snatched her from Paris to protect her.
All the same, Helen is cast with remarkable frequency as a burdened soul who finds it hard to recognize her own identity, in the work of both those who stick to the Trojan version and those who adopt the Egyptian variant.

Helen of Troy is truly epic in scope, taking on an ambitious story that sweeps across various Mediterranean locations, from Troy to Sparta, involves three royal families and their personal intrigues, has passions raging high in both love and hate, and culminates in a series of ambitious battle sequences.
Helen of Troy takes a fairly naturalistic approach to the material, developing the characters and the situation in such a way that the epic events of the story are entirely believable.
Helen is best in her scenes as a younger woman, in which she does a nice job of portraying the rather wild, self-willed girl, but her later scenes just don't have as much power as they could have.

The music evokes a pagan ritual which is alluded to in the film’s trailer, where priests seem to read the future into a fire and perform some kind of ceremony which quickly degenerates into a carousing orgy at Menelaus’s palace.
