HELENA, a city and the county-seat of Phillips county, Arkansas, U.S.A., situated on and at the foot of Crowly's Ridge, about 150 ft. above sea-level, in the alluvial bottoms of the Mississippi river, about 65 m.
It is served by the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley (Illinois Central), the St Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern (Missouri Pacific), the Arkansas Midland, and the Missouri and North Arkansas railways.
Built in part upon "made land," well protected by levees, and lying within the richest cottonproducing region of the south, the rich timber country of the St Francis river, and the Mississippi "bottom lands," Helena concentrates its economic interests in cotton-compressing and shipping, the manufacture of cotton-seed products, lumbering and wood-working.

An additional point of interest is the Confederate Cemetery in Helena, which contains the graves of many of the Southern casualties of the battle, as well as the final resting place of one of the South's great generals: Patrick Cleburne, a resident of Helena.

Prior to the war, Helena had been a busy agricultural and commercial center on the Mississippi River with a population of just over a thousand citizens, but in July of 1862 it had been taken over and remained occupied by Union troops under the command of Major General Samuel Curtis.
The 33rd Missouri was camped near the river bank, and opposite of Helena was a crooked bayou reaching from the Coldwater called the Yazoo Pass.
