Such external evidence as exists bearing on the origin of the Heliand and the companion poem is contained in a Latin document printed by Flacius Illyricus in 1562.

It is therefore obvious to conclude that the Heliand was written to persuade the upper class — the chieftains and priests.
The design of the Heliand is to place Jesus parallel with Thor, champion of the Germanic gods, and/or Saxnot, the guardian god of the Saxons, and place the Christian God - and in some aspects Jesus as well - on equal footing with Odin, who during this period was the ruler of the gods.

The Heliand (the word means 'Saviour'), a verse retelling of the life of Christ, is the only substantial poetic text surviving in Old Saxon.
The Heliand was probably composed in the mid-ninth century in a monastery with strong associations with Anglo-Saxon England, most likely Fulda or one of its associated houses.
It has been shown that the Heliand also draws upon patristic and Carolingian theological and exegetical scholarship in its interpretation of the gospels, and it has been suggested that it is particularly influenced by the poet's response to the gospel of John.

It seems to have escaped attention, though, that the Heliand’s Simon Peter, as the first bishop of Rome, can be seen as a representative of eighth- and ninth-century papal politics.
In the Heliand, Christ’s bestowal of the keys of heaven to Peter and Peter’s primacy among the apostles can be read as papal auctoritas extending over all of Christendom, including the Carolingian Empire.
Moreover, the religious-political context in with the Heliand finds itself allows for further speculation, since Emperor Louis the Pious found himself at odds with Pope Gregory IV who held the papal see when the Heliand is thought to have been commissioned.
