Sunflower - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The sunflower ( Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant in the Family Asteraceae with a large flower head ( inflorescence).
Sunflowers are native to the Americas, and were domesticated around 1000 B.C. Francisco Pizarro found the Inca subjects venerating the sunflower as an image of their sun god, and gold images of the "flower" as well as seeds were taken back to Europe early in the 16th century.
The Jerusalem artichoke ( Helianthus tuberosa) is related to the sunflower.

Sunflowers originate from North America and are now grown extensively for their seeds which produce vegetable oil that is used in cooking, salad oils and margarines.
Helianthus annuus is a highly variable species that is indigenous to North America.
Sunflowers are now grown extensively worldwide although it is ironic that it was only in the 1970's that largescale planting started taking place in its country of origin in the USA.

Achenes of 86 populations of H. annuus were collected from the central Great Plains of the US (Seiler 1994).
annuus (ANN-2229, PI 586886) was evaluated by growing the plants of the original population in a common environment (greenhouse) to see if the low levels of saturated fatty acids observed in the population from its native habitat were expressed in the progeny.
