Attack helicopter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An attack helicopter is a military helicopter armed for attacking targets on the ground such as enemy infantry, armored vehicles and structures, using autocannon and machine-gun fire, rockets, and precision guided missiles such as the Hellfire.
The Sikorsky H-34 was also modified into a gunship by the French Navy: standard armament comprised a MG 151 20-mm cannon firing from the cabin door, two 12.7-mm machine guns firing from the cabin windows to port, plus racks for 37 mm or 68 mm rockets.
During the 1950s, with the increasing use of the helicopter for infantry transport, the U.S. saw a need for helicopters to be used as aerial artillery to provide fire suppression and ground support close to the battle.

 Helicopter Gunships History
Helicopters were first used extensively during the Korea War but typically in medevac missions and cargo delivery roles.
The marines also found, with the helicopter, that vertical deployment avoided the most dangerous part of a landing assault (by surface landing craft), as the French and British forces demonstrated with helicopters during the Suez campaign (in spite of their landing on beaches full of vacationers).
This helicopter was a derivative of the succesful Bell 47.

 AH-56A Cheyenne
The experience of Vietnam showed that the existing attack helicopter, the AH-1 Cobra, was vulnerable even to light antiaircraft fire and lacked the agility to fly close to the ground for long periods of time.
The new attack helicopter program announced in August 1972 drew from the combat experience of the Cobra and the developmental experience of the Cheyenne to specify an aircraft that could absorb battle damage and had the power for rapid movement and heavy loads.
The helicopter would have to be able to fly nap of the earth and maneuver with great agility to succeed in a new antitank mission on a high-intensity battlefield.

Gunship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term "gunship" is used in several contexts, all sharing the general idea of a light vessel armed with heavy guns.
More recently, a "gunship" has been used to refer to helicopters to which machine-guns and similar weapons systems have been mounted, or a fixed-wing aircraft with heavy guns on board.
Most sci-fi "gunships" appear to follow the general principles of the helicopter gunship such as the Republic LAAT/i Gunship in Star Wars.

 CRASH 47 - Gunship
Flying a military helicopter is a tough job at the best of times - and when you're in the thick of combat and they're using you for target practice, quick thinking and perfect control are your best weapons.
The helicopter is flown using two basic controls: the 'cyclic joystick', which controls the pitch and roll (direction of the copter), and the 'collective', which alters the angle of the rotor blades (and therefore the altitude).
Gunship has loads of playability; the manual makes good reading for a couple of hours, and the in-game presentation is excellent.

CATH: Gunship   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
A very good unit for its cost, deployed at the right time and in the right situation, the powerful helicopter Gunship could prove to be a battle-winning unit.
The Interceptor is a high-altitude combat aircraft (meaning simply that the Gunship cannot attack it), with the ability to swoop down out of the clouds and destroy any Gunship it might chance to encounter, then swiftly return to its relatively safe cruising altitude before any other enemy unit can react.
Ergo: no Gunship squadron should be deployed without sufficient high-altitude air cover of its own, but with air superiority firmly established, the Gunship can be a deadly and feared weapon of war.

Helicopter gunships have been around since the early 60s and started to prove themselves in the Vietnam War in the form of both armed troop transports and as dedicated weapons platforms.
