Heligoland (in German, Helgoland and in North Frisian, Lun, Hålilönj) is a small, carfree German island in the North Sea.
Heligoland is located 70 km from the German coast line, and actually consists of two islands: the populated 1.0 km² main island (Hauptinsel) to the west and the Düne ("dune") to the east, which is somewhat smaller at 0.7 km², as well as lower, surrounded by sand beaches and not permanently inhabited.
The island of Heligoland is a geological oddity; the presence of the main island's characteristic red sedimentary rock in the middle of the German Bight is unusual.

 SPURN BIRD OBSERVATORY
A preliminary meeting was held in September 1945 to decide on the site for a Heligoland trap, work on which was begun almost immediately and the first bird (a Blackbird) was ringed on November 17th.
Initially coverage was limited to the main migration seasons, being extended to winter weekends in the early 1950's to trap and ring some of the large numbers of Snow Buntings which used to occur at that time of year and gradually coverage was increased (whenever possible) to cover the late spring and summer.
This was especially the case from 1964 when the current warden, Barry Spence, was appointed, in conjunction with the fact that an interest in birds and their migrations was steadily growing and more bird-watchers were staying at the observatory, often for longer periods.

Harvey wrote again in March 1946 indicating the nature of his proposals which included: the erection of a heligoland trap, the presence of biologists to operate the trap, ringing of nesting cliff-breeding birds, and periodic publication of progress reports and results.
The traps continued to be a problem and in November it was decided to build two traps, one in the south quarry and one in the garden of the Old Light.
It was replaced by the Terrace Trap in 1951 and a Quarter Wall trap followed sometime during the wardenship of Peter Davies (1951-4).

The second leading ship of the torpedo-boat fleet was sent with Flotillas VII and IX to the Baltic for training in mine-sweeping, as the mine-sweeping divisions did not suffice for the work of escorting the U-boats as well as that of clearing the routes of mines.
While the battleships were at squadron practice in the Bight of Heligoland on March 5, the Kronprinz and the Grosser Kurfurst collided and suffered damage which in the case of both ships took several weeks to repair; before these were complete any considerable enterprise for the Fleet was not to be thought of.

Report from Practically Nowhere Chapter 3
This, Miss Whittaker said cheerfully, was a Heligoland bird trap, the most serviceable kind there is. I stared astonishedly at the Heligoland bird trap, estimating it one hundred feet long, thirty feet wide, and eight feet high--roughly one million times as large as the average bird.
Presently, Miss Whittaker saw my dismay, and observed that a Heligoland bird trap--although such elemental devices as dead herrings, balls of wool, and W.B.'s rifle had been used instead--is superior to any of these because of the sheer intricacy of its mechanism, which only the most erudite of birds could hope to grasp.
As she explained this, Miss Whittaker scurried about the trap, thrashing her arms, yanking ropes, and closing doors by way of demonstration, and when she had finished, she put her hand demonstratively into the wooden box and discovered, to her astonishment, there was a bird inside.

 Intensive monitoring recommendations
We suggest that bait not be used with a standardized Heligoland trap or mist-netting program, because it is difficult to use consistently and may influence stopover behavior of migrants.
Netting and trapping effort and the birds captured in non-standard hours should be recorded as such, and excluded from data used for trend analysis.
At sites where trapping or netting is not possible, an ET based on a census and/or a visible migration count, together with incidental observations, is acceptable; but inclusion of banding is preferred because of the additional useful information it yields.

We suggest that bait not be used with a standardized Heligoland trap or mistnetting program, because it is difficult to use consistently and may influence stopover behavior of migrants.
The nets and traps should be operated during the same number of hours during the same standard time period each day, starting at a constant clock time or at a constant time relative to sunrise.
Nonetheless, even during the standard period, the trapping or netting operation should be stopped if conditions arise that endanger the safety of the birds (e.g., severe weather, more birds captured than can be safely handled, predator problems).

How ringing works - The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
First bird ringers catch the bird at a special trapping place, or at the nest when the bird is still a fledgling.
The ring is fitted, details of the species, its age and its condition and the location it is being ringed in are noted and then the bird is released as soon as possible.
Another kind of trap, called the Heligoland trap, directs birds down a narrowing tunnel of nets until they are caught at the end.

Once there were plenty of ducks in the pipe, the fowler would reveal himself at the entrance of the pipe driving the ducks further down the channel trapping them in the net at the end from where they were removed.
At the Doncaster Decoy, ducks were not taken during the breeding season and trapping took place from November to March when, as now, the resident ducks would be joined by large numbers of migrant ducks from the continent wintering in our somewhat milder climate.
Interestingly, a similar arrangement has been used in recent years at a number of sites in Britain for trapping birds for ringing – it is known as a ‘Heligoland trap’.
