The heliograph sent its signals by reflecting sunlight towards the intended recipient with a mirror or mirrors, the beam being keyed on and off with a shutter or a tilting mirror, allowing Morse code to be sent.
Heliographs were used by the armies of several countries during the late 1800's; they were highly popular with British forces in India because of the dependable sunlight.
The classic heliograph is the Mance pattern, devised by Sir Henry Mance at Bombay in 1869.

The Mance Heliograph was easily operated by one man, and as it weighed about seven pounds, the operator could readily carry it and the tripod on which it rests.

The heliograph is a device for communicating over distances using light from the sun reflected in mirrors to flash signals in Morse code or some other agreed upon messaging system.
Heliographic communication was used in Arizona during the summer of 1886 by General Nelson Miles in his pursuit of Geronimo.
The heliograph line ultimately attained a length of over 200 miles from Mt. Baldy, to stations in New Mexico, and undoubtedly aided the troops in capturing Geronimo and his men who were frightened by the flashes of light which appeared everywhere.

Viewed by transmitted light the image was composed of bright lines in the darker field of the remaining opaque coating on the glass; when held against a dark surface and lighted from the front, the image looked fl in its surrounding light gray field.
This first permanent example of a heliograph was destroyed during an attempt to copy it some years later.
The resulting image is therefore a direct positive: the light sections being the hardened bitumen, the darks ones being the actual pewter plate surface.

The Niépce heliograph, "View from the Window at Le Gras" -- more popularly known as the First Photograph -- was first housed in a sealed, protective case with an oxygen-free atmosphere shortly after its acquisition by The University of Texas in the mid-1960s.
While the heliograph was out of its frame, Getty Museum photographers devoted their expertise, facilities, and a day and a half of their time to capturing the elusive image of the heliograph through both large format film and high-resolution digital photography.
This information is consistent with previous observations about the structure of the framed heliograph, and provides additional supporting evidence to the date and provenance of the piece.

That's when the Auxilary Heliograph Traffic Light (AHTL) occurred to me. As well as using conventional traffic light type technology (LEDs, light bulbs etc), the AHTL would have a sun-following mirror on top which would reflect light into the housing of the traffic light.
This light would in turn be reflected out of the appropriate colour filter to indicate the state of the traffic light.
On dim days and at night the traffic light would be illuminated normally but on bright summer days the traffic light would still be visible, illuminated by the Sun.

Your sight is very interesting, and also I have studied the old movie "The Walking Hills" but, was somewhat disappointed with their coverage of the Heliograph, sometimes thinking that the prop man did not have a firm idea of what it was supposed to look like, or how it was to be used.
The heliograph was basically mounted on a short "board", perhaps a foot to a foot and a half long.
I became interested in heliographs when I was stationed at Fort Huachuca in 1959, and I saw a good article in Arizona Highways on their use in the Indian Wars.
