The CHUD.COM Message Boards - Why Did It Take So Long For Comics To Get Respect?
The comics industry has been in the hands of some real shitbags in the past, and yes, that seems to have been what locked comics down as kid's stuff for the next couple of decades.
Comics have no respect and as long as the medium is used primarily as a vehicle to deliver superhero fantasies to 30 year olds, it won't.
Most of the local daily papers feature a comics review at least once a month, there are several comic festivals and stores that cater to stuff beyond superheroes, and yes, most of the libraries have a large comics section.

Helix (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Helix was a short-lived imprint of DC Comics, with a science-fiction theme, launched in 1996 and last used in 1998.
Despite the involvement of successful SF/fantasy novelists Michael Moorcock, Lucius Shepard and Christopher Hinz, and established comics creators Howard Chaykin, Warren Ellis, Walt Simonson, and Garth Ennis, sales of the comic books were low, and most of the ongoing series were cancelled after 12 or fewer issues.
Ellis' Transmetropolitan was switched to the Vertigo imprint, where it continued for several more years before reaching its planned conclusion.

Lean Left: Are Comics a Mass Medium?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Comics also do not work for visual fans, because comic illustrations are not not dynamic, they are static.
Perhaps romance and mystery comics, for example, do not suffer as much in the art department because they rely less on a sense of wonder for their power.
Technology has created visual options that are much more exciting than comic art, and the economics of publishing have changed in such a way as to make comics prohibitively expensive in terms of story to cost ratios.

Onboard the Helix, Lexa (Karen Cliche) tells the Mutant X team that her contacts insist they apprehend their target quickly and carefully.
When the team presses her for more information, Lexa reveals that the people she's referring to are known as The Dominion -- a covert group who have been policing the abuses of science for the last few hundred years, and have successfully prevented countless disasters that would have destroyed the world.
She says the man they've been sent to capture is a dangerous super-mutant who lives in the woods with his faithful followers.

The CHUD.COM Message Boards - Save the Pamphlets
The areas where comics are picking up new readers are in the TPB realms (especially the ones that appeal more to the literary crowd, but leaning towards non-superhero stuff).
Continuity, the way it stands in comics now, is one of the biggest reasons the medium is inaccessible to "outsiders".
I disagree that there are no "gateway comics" (I love that term...like comics are marijuana or something) for kids, but yes, I've never understood why the comics industry has so much trouble getting their product on the shelves of bookstores or drugstores or other places.

Plenty of superheroes, but where is the sci-fi?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Most comic book conventions are multi-purpose, catering not only to superhero fans, but also to fans of sci-fi, horror and fantasy.
Marvel Comics increased the number of titles it published, and sci-fi comics were a big part of the new wave.
But as those publishers went out of business, their comics were forgotten, with the exception of a few favorites like Mike Baron and Steve Rude's "Nexus." And even "Nexus," last published by Dark Horse Comics, can't sell enough copies nowadays to stay profitable.

PULP CULTURE column for Feb. 11, 1999: The Fall of Marvel Comics
Warren Ellis, whose books "Transmetropolitan" and "Hellblazer" have proven solid hits for DC Comics' Helix and Vertigo imprints, was to write the first of a new line of mature-readers horror comics for Marvel.
The problem with horror comics, however, is that, by definition, they are intended for mature audiences.
"Comics are for children!" they decreed, and Marvel's horror line died in the womb.

This structure has novel features which are of considerable biological interest," reads the introduction to their first paper, published in the science journal Nature.
