Thought Renewal: Hell? Yes. - A Reply and Rebuttal
And to rightly understand hell, we need to be clear that God is not capricious with regards to punishment of wrongdoing.
Hell was prepared for the devil and his angels (Mt 25.41), not humans.
The same words are used to describe the duration of torment in hell as are used to describe the duration of bliss in heaven.

Edwards himself might be comforted to know that even Hell hasn't gone completely out of style.
From the vantage of modernity the blind spots of Jonathan Edwards are all too obvious, from his ownership of slaves to a self-righteousness that even his own congregation could not stomach.
But if the profoundly different outcomes achieved by America's liberal order and the other projects born of the Enlightenment are any clue, maybe he was right to suggest that those who discount Hell in the afterlife are less apt to guard against creating one here on earth.

Undying Worm, Unquenchable Fire - Christianity Today Magazine
Church leaders should not neglect teaching on hell but should teach it with "sensitivity and discernment." At funerals it is proper to declare the heavenly inheritance of Christians but not the condemnation of those whose relationship to God is unclear.
Hell understood as eternal conscious punishment is the historic view of the church and is the mainstream evangelical position.
This is evident in the candor with which it describes the history of the debate, in the makeup of the working group (including scholars on both sides), in its design (the first and last two chapters form a literary inclusion that calls for theological inclusion), and in its conclusions and recommendations.

If a judge were to set criminals free without the punishment specified in the law, that judge would be unjust and would have to be dismissed from the bench.
In the same way, a mighty good and holy God would also condemn a sinner or a person to hell that chooses to remain separated from Him in their sins.

Belief in Hell is actually up a bit in recent years: from 53 per cent in 1981 and 58 in 1952.

The great 'pit' [hell] would only need to be about 100 miles or less in diameter to contain, with much room to spare, all the forty billion or so people who have ever lived, assuming their 'spiritual' bodies are the same size as their physical bodies.
Thousands of years ago, the Bible described a place called hell in the heart of the earth that matches exactly what science is discovering.

Come Back, Clinton Sex Nation / Is the country better off with a president who actually has an active libido? Hell yes.
Magnetic, charming as hell, a man who you knew actually had sex and enjoyed it and possessed a highly active all-American libido and knew what all the body parts did and where they went, Hillary notwithstanding.
And yet he was president and that made it all a little weird and unusual and refreshing and then of course it turned ugly, and he was vilified and attacked and sneered at from all corners for overusing this libido, but still, there it is.
And women swooned for him, yes they did, and there were articles and commentaries and even in glossy women's fashion mags they talked up the amazing sex appeal of the president, the Southern charm and masculine assurance and that naughty gleam in his eye.

 hell? yes.
The biblical language about hell is SO very explicit and graphic that you get the idea that the authors just couldn't come up with words sufficient to emphasize how really really bad it is. Jesus' own words in Matthew 13:42 are just one example of many.
Just as the epitome of heaven in Scripture is being always with the Lord and living in His presence, so the nature of hell is portrayed as being cast out from the presence of the Lord forever (e.g., 2Thess 1:9).
The reason Christians avoid the casual use of "hell" and "damn" as swear words is because the realities these words represent are far too serious to be trivialized.

Reformation Theology: HELL YES! by Pastor John Samson
Well perhaps not hell itself, but the doctrine of hell as a place of eternal punishment for the wicked is certainly under full frontal attack in our day.
As Christians we should not be surprised that hell is not a particularly popular concept in the minds of the general public.
Some preachers are launching their attacks against the concept of hell openly from the pulpit; yet others are just as zealous in the fight, but wage their war through the act of silence, as they pride themselves on never mentioning the word "hell" at all in their sermons.
