  HELLBASTARD,the grinding hardcore punk/metal band-Hellbastard
Quaintly named Geordie quartet HELLBASTARD are "the poorest band on this fuckin' earth" according to singer/guitarist Scruff. But to their former mates this ripping, moshing band are "pop stars".
The security chaps are eyeing them with all the suspicion of a stockbroker having his wages counted by a Kings Cross wino who's down to his last mouthful. It's just too hot to argue so we retreat to the pub across the road. The barman refuses to serve us.
After the last LP Hellbastard seemed to be changing direction;heading away from their punk roots to a more metal sound.

HELLBASTARD were a relatively overlooked English Thrash band that spawned sometime during the latter half of the 1980's.
HELLBASTARD are best described as a Thrash unit borrowing some degree of DARK ANGEL influence.
The tracks laid down here are both fueled with aggressive nature of 80's Thrash and made to shine with musical competence, at once evident once the leads start kicking in.

The German metal machine has everything it takes to irrefutably be labelled pure and true to the paradigms of the style.
Adorned with a true metal image, title, art and music the gang of Mayhem, Vomitor, Avenger and Hellbastard recall what it was like to be a true metal fan and unabashedly rub it in the face of the mutant naysayers.
It is amazing what keeps the spirit of the glory days alive, but the way Nocturnal looks and acts the part is proof of the timelessness of the music.

 HAVOC RECORDS AND DISTRIBUTION
Hellbastard’s first two demos Ripper Crust and Hate Militia (Ripper Crust was later bootlegged on vinyl) along with the LP Heading for Internal Darkness are among my favorite early crust releases.
Their two demos Tip of the Iceberg and Terminal Filth Stenchcore were followed by the 1987 7” Welcome to the Orgy on Peaceville, the label with whose name the rise of crust will forever be linked.
(as was Hellbastard I must note) That said Sacrilege Behind the Realms of Madness and the first Bolt Thrower LP are two absolute total classics, near perfect mixes of metal and hardcore.

Deadweight play metal pretty much to formula here - moody, introspective, almost gothic verses followed by raging hellbastard choruses and lots of gravel-throated shouting.
In the great battle between the moody introspective bits and the hellbastard wall-of-fuzz bits the latter tend to win out every time and, well, that’s about it.
It’s metal, it’s not meant to be new and shiny and different.

It was CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER along with bands like D.R.I., ACCUSED, AGNOSTIC FRONT, C.O.C., THE CRUMBSUCKERS, SLAYER, HELLBASTARD, NAPALM DEATH etc. that in the mid-80s turned a world of metalheads onto hardcore and a planet of punks onto metal.
Some say this blending was the death of both genres, others (like me) hailed it as a whole new genre unto itself.
