The author considers the Hellenistic period to have been one of widespread innovation as shown by the emergence of a host of original thinkers and scientists besides Epicurus, Theocritus, Euclid, Archimedes and Ptolemy.
He documents the gradual decline in the number of the Greco-Macedonian elites ruling the vast Hellenistic Empires- often at war with each other–until, as he puts it ‘the Hellenistic world… shorn of everything east of the Euphrates, was incorporated into the Roman Empire.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2005.08.20
For the Hellenistic historian war reveals the characters of groups and men because it is the most dangerous enterprise an individual or community would face, while dedicatory inscriptions tend to highlight the generosity of a benefactor by emphasizing the magnitude of communal suffering in war.
Hellenistic political leaders, like their modern counterparts, tried to justify their decisions to go to war, and it is difficult to disentangle the 'real reasons' a community went to war from the propaganda and justifications recorded in the sources.
Hellenistic historiography stressed the centrality of war; important victories were often recalled in speeches, lengthy dedicatory inscriptions, and festivals and celebrations; and the Hellenistic urban landscape was thick with monuments to war.

The Hellenistic period was the first age of Western imperial expansion in Asia and one of the principal formative epochs in the history of ancient Eurasia.
These two aspects of the Hellenistic period, the emergence of Greek culture as a significant factor in the culture of the old world and the decline of Greece's Near Eastern rivals, were intertwined, since it was Macedonian imperial domination in the east that facilitated the cultural hegemony of Greece.
Hellenistic historiography was in every sense a continuation of the Classical tradition of historical writing inasmuch as the historians shared the same polis-centered viewpoint of their fifth-and fourth-century B.C. predecessors, treated similar subjects, used their predecessors' works as models, and even sometimes wrote continuations of them.

The hellenistic age is traditionally assumed to start at the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. Although of course any periodization of history remains arbitrary, it probably makes more sense to choose an earlier date, since Alexander’s death itself did not really move the creation of the hellenistic world.
