Nearly five decades after that pivotal Life cover, Heller is a professor in the electrical and computer engineering and the bioengineering departments at the University of California, San Diego.
Heller's diverse research interests drew him to this area, and in 1991, working on his own and using his retirement money, he started experimenting with the idea of an electronic DNA microarray.
Heller joined the UC-San Diego faculty in 2001, but he still consults for Nanogen and remains active in the company's new nanotechnology efforts.

HELLER Machine Tools - HELLER AT TRIUMPH
Supporting their decision to work with Heller was the Heller UK plant responsible for building the very machines that they required and their strength in depth to handle the project at all of its phases.
Russ involved Heller engineers from the outset of the project, whilst the engine design was still fluid, enabling the manufacturing cells to be fine-tuned to suit the engine components but also allowing the design to be modified if necessary to permit the most efficient production system.
In addition, Heller supplied and installed a roller tracking system which operates between the machines and which was designed to ensure that swarf and coolant remains within the machine system.

DRDC Valcartier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The early portions of the 1960s was taken up developing a series of increasingly powerful high-acceleration solid rocket propellants, and to test them they designed and built a test vehicle that would later become the Black Brant sounding rocket.
Due to this research CARDE was later involved in the design of a US-Canada-Mexico meteorological sounding rocket, the Metroc.
The result was the CRV7 rocket, which had roughly twice the speed of the existing US design, and with enough energy to be able to puncture Warsaw Pact aircraft hangers.

It was unclear how many rockets fell on the city, but a spokesman for the Haifa fire department, Chezi Levi, said one crowded district had five or six hits.

In both cases, the spark was the killing of some Israeli soldiers and the abduction of others by non-state Islamist actors (Hamas and Hizbollah), supported by Syria and Iran, who infiltrated across internationally recognized borders from territories from which Israel had unilaterally withdrawn.
In both cases, the attacks/abductions were preceded or accompanied by rocket fire onto Israeli territory.
In both cases, the attacks/abductions provoked large-scale Israeli military responses meant to secure not only the release of the abducted soldiers without any concessions in return but also a fundamental change in the political reality along and across the borders in question.

 Catch-22
Heller and Pynchon both use the term "international cartel" to highlight the lawless World War II enterprise(s) which are visible (Catch-22) and invisible (Gravity's Rainbow) and control the actions of the two novels' protagonists.
Of course, Heller is not to be outdone in German nomenclature with his ever-present display of the Peter Principle that every officer rises to the level of his own incompetence: the meteoric rise of the parade lover Scheisskopf ("Shithead") from second lieutenant to three-star general.
Heller's depiction of Milo's operations is graphic and visible, whereas what Pynchon calls the "Them" in Gravity's Rainbow are invisible, even though their effects are as chilling as Heller's.

This prompted more resolute declarations of intent on the part of the PA and PLO leadership, orders banning public displays of weapons on the streets, and plans by the Palestinian Security Service to prevent rocket attacks from the northern Gaza Strip.

One way to make the program more attractive for small farmers would be to establish a “floor” for the stewardship payment of $500 for farms up to 50 acres and $1,000 for farms greater than 50 acres.
By establishing such a floor, “the smaller farmers are assured that the time they put into the application process is warranted,” Heller said.
But, Heller found that many farmers were willing to accept a green payment in lieu of a traditional subsidy payment if the transition occurs over time.
