	Welcome to Berlin Marzahn-Hellersdorf - Berlin.de
		The consolidation of the settlements of Hellersdorf, Kaulsdorf, and Mahlsdorf to create the new district of Hellersdorf on 1 June 1986 represented the last major administrative change for the area prior to the aforementioned amalgamation of the two districts on 1 January 2001.
		A further project, “Gut Hellersdorf – wirtschaftliche Entwicklung des Standorts“ (Good Hellersdorf – Economic Development of the District), which is aimed at the development of integrated commercial zones within the residential area of Hellersdorf, is currently being established.
		Firstly, the population of the district, as a result of the influx of predominantly young families to the new residential areas in Marzahn within the last twenty years and to those in Hellersdorf in the last 10-15 years, grew rapidly in a relatively short space of time.

	Berlin: Ecological building renovation of a pre-fabricated housing complex
		The slab-constructed housing complex in the Hellersdorf district of Berlin is one of many hundreds of large-scale estates in Eastern Europe which face the problems of irreparable damages and low ecological standards.
		The Hellersdorf district was founded between 1985 and 1992 as a self contained new town on previously agricultural land.
		The Hellersdorf district has a population of 136,000 and is some 15 km from the eastern city centre of Alexanderplatz.

		The Gründerzeit Museum in Mahlsdorf, HELLERSDORF, to the south-east, is housed in an 18th century manor and displays recreations of typical Berlin interiors - working class family homes, bars - from the period 1880-1900, the so-called Gründerzeit or period when Berlin really became Berlin.
		The Feuerstätten Museum was founded by a local chimney sweep and houses a collection of the beautiful decorative tiled ovens with which Berliners used to heat their homes.
		Marzahn and Hellersdorf are served by the S-Bahn and many tram lines.
