 The Metal Crypt - Reviews
Now that Hellfire Club is finally upon us, I can finally judge for myself if Edguy's 6th full length studio release is worthy of all the absurd hype that has surrounded the band since they left AFM Records to sign with major metal label Nuclear Blast late last year.
No, it is not even close to being Album of the Year, and I say that despite the fact we're only 3 months in and we have yet to see releases from many other major bands in the scene who are slated for a new disc in 2004.
Hellfire Club is good, no doubt about it, but its not nearly as good as the hype surrounding it (mostly generated from Nuclear Blast and Tobias himself) has built it up to be.

This is the kind of album that defines a band, so I won’t waste anymore time beating around the bush.
It is a classic heavy metal track, and I could understand why they initially considered this title as the album title as well, although I`m glad they settled for Hellfire Club.
This song is the first single and title track off their EP and it is a mid-tempo track with a good dose of heaviness.

After having been loyal to their label AFM Records since their debut album "Savage Poetry" back in 1995 they now release their first full-length album for their new label Nuclear Blast.
We played ballads like Scarlet Rose and Forever from the new album, or even Lavatory Love Machine, which is a rock song actually, but we adapted it to work with acoustic guitars, too.
That was the reason why we wrote all songs as a package - we wrote 15 songs that we liked very much and afterwards we wondered which of them we could put on an EP and which on the album, and that was not a matter of quality but what songs fit together, you know...

This album is slightly more mainstream than their last LP, Mandrake, but it is very, very good nontheless.
All classic metal/rock albums have an ebb and flow about them, a good mix of stormers, more thoughtful numbers and the odd memorable ballad here and there.
"Hellfire Club" is almost there but what lets it down is the inclusion of too many fillers, the most obvious one being "Lavatory Love Machine".

"Hellfire Club" is a masterpice, and I'm very impressed with it.
This album is stripped-down (the symphonic overkill of earlier albums is mostly gone), song-centered and a WHOLE lot less pretentious than other competitors in the current slew of prog/power-metal.
Last thing: the album has a great sense of humor that very much reminds of Helloween (Dr. Stein, or Rise and Fall, for instance) and completely deflates any pretentiousness about the album.

 Penny Dreadful - News Archive
The follow-up to 2001's "Mandrake", "Hellfire Club" was produced by EDGUY and Norman Meiritz, with additional assistance from Sascha Paeth (RHAPSODY, ANGRA), who was responsible for the drum sound on the album.
After releasing several successful albums in the late Eighties/early Nineties (including the classic 1989 debut "Slowly We Rot" and its equally punishing 1990 follow-up, "Cause of Death"), the band announced their breakup, with John Tardy's disinterest in touring apparently a major factor, according to the Internet heavy metal encyclopedia BNR Metal Pages.
As on their previous records, the band successfully combines fl metal with very melodic folk elements and humppa, a kind of polka, in such a powerful and highly entertaining way that even the hardest of metalheads are pleased to join the dance.
