  Review: "Hello, Dolly!"
Of course, you can no more do "Hello, Dolly!" without an appropriate Dolly than "Hamlet" without the prince, and, in Ashley Gaines, Woodland Hills had a Dolly of warmth and presence, a commanding performer able to turn sunny or brassy, flirtatious or sentimental as needed.
But it also provided time for scene changes: Dolly could lead a procession out on the runway and, by the time it circled back to the stage, the set was ready for the next scene.
Dolly, of course, took to the runway as she did to that turkey, savoring every bit.

I don't remember much of that time (late 60's) but I do remember seeing the movie with my mother at a drive-in way back then, and then catching a commercial-ridden version on a local TV station in the 80's after I had significantly fallen in love with Babs by way of Yentl.
Let's assume that Ephraim died some 2 years ago and Dolly in despair cut herself out of her old life.
Even at 27 (Babs age at the time), she could have been widowed at 25, which at the turn of the century would have been about 7 years of marriage for most ladies...

Because the leading character in the story, Dolly Levi, is intended to be a much older woman, presumably in her fifties or so, whose husband of many years has died and left her penniless.
Mainly, in "Hello, Dolly!" one gets to witness a huge, bloated, overly extravagant, big-screen spectacular and ponder the reasons why a young, attractive, and highly marriageable Dolly Levi would be chasing a middle-aged Walter Matthau as Vandergelder, unless she was only after his money.
The showstopper, of course, is "Hello, Dolly," which the filmmakers milk for everything it's worth, extending it for almost a dozen minutes.

Speaking to her dead husband, Dolly reiterates her desire to marry and joins the parade as it passes by.
As the relationships of Cornelius/Irene and Barnaby/Minnie develop, Dolly returns to the Harmonia Gardens alone and is serenaded by the waiters, who have not seen her since her husband's death.

 Hello, Dolly!
Dolly first emerges from a "studiously" recreated set of New York City, circa 1890, and already she's fighting for attention with a gigantic set and with her own ostentatious costume.
Because the musical numbers are all scaled somewhere on the spectrum of overstuffed grandiosity, what fun there is in Dolly obtains mostly in Streisand's loopy line readings—a real comic aplomb that her recent near-desertion of acting has made harder to remember—or else in the kinesthetic leaps and bounds in famed choreographer Michael Kidd's dance routines.
The effect is not to delight the audience with exuberant abundance (in the manner of Moulin Rouge) but to telegraph all too clearly that Hello, Dolly's actors, designers, and director alike are perpetually straining to compensate for a show with no dramatic center, no sense of economy, no forward momentum.
