Hells Canyon is one of the most imposing river gorges in the North American West.
Most of the older rocks we see in the canyon came from underwater volcanoes when Hells Canyon's terrains were part of an island arc in the mid-Pacific Ocean.
The resulting canyon, roughly ten miles across, is not as dramatic as the Grand Canyon.

According to the Nez Percé tribe, Coyote dug the Snake River Canyon in a day to protect the people on the west side of the river from the Seven Devils, a band of evil spirits living in the mountain range to the east.

The Hells Canyon Initiative is a state, federal, and private partnership to restore Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) in the Hells Canyon area of Oregon, Idaho and Washington.
The Hells Canyon project area encompasses over 5.5 million acres in the Snake River drainage from the mouth of the Clearwater River, Idaho, south to Brownlee reservoir.
Bighorn sheep were historically abundant, but were extirpated from Hells Canyon and the surrounding area by 1945 by a combination of competition for forage with domestic livestock, introduced diseases, and over-hunting.
