Agv Helmet -- Recommendations and Resources   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Helmets are among the most ancient forms of protection, and are known to have been worn by ancient Greeks and throughout the Middle Ages; at this time they were primarily military equipment, protecting the head from cutting blows with swords and flying arrows.
This confusion is relieved by understanding that the perpendicular impact speed of the helmet is usually not the same as the road speed of the motor cycle and that the severity of the impact is determined not only by the speed of the head but also by the nature of the surface it hits.
Helmet was acclaimed as a thinking person's heavy metal band, however, they have been criticized by some Metalheads for creating or paving the way for Nu Metal.

Helmet is an American alternative metal band formed in New York City by Page Hamilton (vocals/guitar) with Henry Bogdan (bass), Peter Mengede (guitar) and John Stanier (drums) in 1989.
Helmet was acclaimed as a "Thinking person's heavy metal band." Eschewing the traditional heavy metal image of long hair and fl clothing, the band preferred simple sweaters and jeans, with short haircuts.
Also in March, Helmet performed at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, with a temporary lineup consisting of Charlie Walker on drums, Chris Traynor on bass, and Anthony Truglio on guitar (former member of Gandhi).

Helmet has officially called it quits, according to their management group.
Helmet was composed of guitarist and singer Page Hamilton, bassist Henry Bogdan, and drummer John Stanier.

With their drillsergeant demeanors and drill-press riffs, the Rollins Band and Helmet typify this Spartan approach to hard rock: Singer Henry Rollins helped shape the sound with Black Flag, a loud-fast Southern California punk band that had mutated into a metal juggernaut by the time of its demise, in 1986.
In contrast, Helmet emerged out of New York in the late '80s with a tight, taut sound that bridged the gap between thrash metal and the art-damaged vocabulary of Lower East Side guitar innovators such as Glenn Branca and the Band of Susans, both of whom employed Helmet founding member Page Hamilton.
Both Helmet and the Rollins Band have created a hard-rock language based on limits, on an interplay in which individual displays of ego-massaging virtuosity are suppressed in favor of the songs.

Helmet have realized that lashing out isn't always the most effective means of achieving sonic obliteration, that building tension by holding back a riff can be just as cathartic, and stopping mid-song to insert a volley of turbulent scree can be even more devastating.
And for those who thought Helmet were all anger and animosity, the band reveals its less serious side with the banjo-blues spoof "Sam Hell" and a whacked-out version of the jazz standard "Beautiful Love," which begins with a plaintive guitar intro before being crushed under a cloud of free-form cacophony.

At the time this album was released (1992), this type of music was called "alternative metal," but this album ("Meantime"), and this band (Helmet) were, for all intensive purposes, the start of the genre that we know today as nu-metal.
Thus, Helmet should definitely be considered one of the most influential and important rock bands of the 1990's.
But, whatever the reason, Helmet are not normally grouped with nu-metal bands, so they are one of the few bands whose albums sales didn't plummet when nu-metal collapsed.

Helmet's independent label debut EP, Strap It On, showcased the group's raw power -- both instrumentally and in Hamilton's growling vocals -- through tracks like the mocking "Sinatra" and rocking "Bad Mood." Signed to the Interscope label soon thereafter, the same lineup released its breakthrough 1992 CD Meantime.
Echeverria left Helmet in the mid-'90s to join Biohazard, and the band bought time to refocus by releasing the Born Annoying collection of B-sides in 1995.
But the Helmet influence was heard throughout rock, whether by Hamilton's involvement with industrial groups (Nine Inch Nails) or indirectly through metal acts (System of a Down), and even the atonal distortion of rap-rock hybrids such as Korn and Limp Bizkit.
