From 1945 until 1990, Helmstedt lay on the border between two Germanys, and served as a border crossing point between East Germany and West Germany, and also between the Soviet Zone of Occupation and the joined Western Zones of the United States, France, and Britian.
On the Railroad, Helmstedt was also a border station, though it must have been less obvious to casual viewers.
For recognition purposes, I share the only picture I have of myself in Helmstedt (I'm sure laws for protection of stone age artifacts were being broken).

Situated sixty miles (97 km) east of Hannover via Braunschweig, the sudden creation of a pseudo-international border in the Cold War division of Germany resulted in it becoming the focus of Allied activity on the autobahn and military rail links with divided Berlin.
The Helmstedt units, located in what had been the British Zone of occupied post-World War II Germany, were operated by the U. Army as subsidiaries of Berlin Brigade.

When I visited Helmstedt in 1971 and 1972, the train was brought there from Braunschweig by a Class 50 2-10-0, which handed over to a DR Class 01 4-6-2.
As to locomotives, In the seventies it was a DB 110 or ocasionally a 140 between Helmstedt and Braunschweig and a DR 118 between Helmstedt and Berlin Charlottenburg.
These two trains used regular DB carriages from BD Essen so there is no indication who the user is. As a guess they were probably used for the Belgian army as there were many Belgian troops stationed within those areas as part of NATO.
