Seine größten Erfolge feierte Rahn als Vereinsspieler mit Rot-Weiß Essen (1951 - 1959): 1953 wurde er DFB-Pokal-Sieger und 1955 Deutscher Meister.
Seinen Platz in den Annalen der Fußballgeschichte erkämpfte sich Rahn aber mit der Nationalmannschaft.

BERLIN — German soccer has suffered a double blow with the deaths of Helmut Rahn, one of the select band of men to score the winning goal in a World Cup final, and fellow World Cup player Lothar Emmerich.
Rahn, known in Germany as the "Hero from Berne," scored West Germany's equaliser and winner in their shock 3-2 win over Hungary in the 1954 World Cup final.
The "Boss" scored 21 goals in 40 internationals but the low, angled drive six minutes from time in the Berne final was the one he will be best remembered for.
