Helmut Sturm was born in Furth im Wald on 21 February 1932.
The same year a lawsuit began at the local court in Munich, in which Helmut Sturm, Heimrad Prem and Dieter Kunzelmann were accused of spreading obscene scripts and abuse of religions.
In 1970 Helmut Sturm was co-founder of the children's forum at the gallery van de Loo in Munich, in which he worked for ten years.

Shortly after, on April 5th of 1937, Michael Wittmann joined No.1 Sturm of 92nd Standarte of the elite Leibstandarte SS Adolph Hitler.In late 1937, he received driver training on Sd.Kfz.222 (a four-wheeled light armoured car) and then Sd.Kfz.232 (a six-wheeled heavy armoured car) and proved to be an excellent driver.
At the same time, Wittmann became friends with Hannes Philipsen, Helmut Wendorff, Alfred Günther, and other members of that unit.
In August of 1943, LSSAH was transferred to Italy, for refiting and occupational duties.

He formed the group SPUR in 1957 with the painters Heimrad Prem, Helmut Sturm and the sculptor Lothar Fischer.
After a joint exhibition at the Pavillon im Alten Botanischen Garten in Munich, they met the Danish artist and philosopher Asger Jorn, who linked them up with the Galerie Van de Loo which exhibited them.
In the same year, Zimmer and Helmut Sturm were founding members of the Gruppe Geflecht, but Zimmer lost interest in the group activites soon and started a solo career.

The foundation of the Gruppe SPUR followed a joint exhibition held in autumn 1957 in the Pavillon im Alten Botanischen Garten in Munich by the painters Heimrad Prem (1934-1978), Helmut Sturm (1932), Hans-Peter Zimmer (1936-1992) and the sculptor Lothar Fischer (1933-2004).
They devised the group's name in January 1958 when thinking about the tracks of their own footprints in the snow.
