General der Artillerie (General of the Artillery) Helmuth Weidling (November 2, 1891 – November 17, 1955) was a German Army officer and the last German commandant of Berlin during the final assault by Soviet forces just before the end of World War II in Europe.
On 1 January 1942, Weidling was appointed to command the 86th Infantry Division and a month later was promoted to the rank of Major General.
Weidling died on 17 November 1955, apparently in the custody of the KGB.

The German surrender is made by General der Artillerie Helmuth Weidling, CO of LVI Panzer Korps, and last "Kampf-kommandant" of Berlin.
With over 130,000 men surrendering in Berlin, later that day General Weidling was taken, together with Mohnke, Gunsche, and other survivors from the Bunker, to the airfield at Strausberg (where Zhukov had his field HQ), about 35 km east of the city, where the Russians had established a special holding camp for VIP prisoners.
Weidling told him later that he had been taken to the Reichskanzlei where he was filmed coming out of one of the exits to the Voss Strasse from the cellars beneath the ruins of the Reichs Chancellery.

Helmuth Weidling was a colonel during the campaign in Poland in 1939 with the 56th Artillery Regiment, and climbed the rank ladder very quickly through his early victories in Poland, France, and Russia.
He was promoted to the rank of a full general on 20 Oct 1943 after a steady series of promotions.
Weidling was imprisoned in a Russian camp for the remainder of his life.

The exact manner of their deaths and what happened immediately afterwards has always been something historians have argued over, but the general consensus being that Hitler shot himself and Eva Braun took poison, their bodies being hastily cremated just outside the bunker.
Goebbels followed suit on the 1 May and Weidling drafted an order for the remainder of the garrison to lay down its arms on the morning of 2 May 1945, and signalled such to Col Gen V. Chuikov.
A number of refugee groups, including both civilian and military personnel managed to break out and flee westwards, but at 15.00 the Soviet artillery stopped firing, the sudden silence as they say, was deafening.

If you got any information on quantity numbers, that would also be welcome.
Berlin was defended by the units commanded by an army corps(the 56pz corps) under command of General Der Artillerie Helmuth Weidling.
So what armor(not that i say armor) there would have been would probaly been a mix of PZ IV and Panthers and whatever the germans would have scraped together from the repair shacks.
