John Clare - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At the age of seven he was taken from school to tend sheep and geese; four years later he began to work on a farm, attending in the evenings a school where he is said to have learned algebra.
He remained free, mostly at home in Helpston, for the five months to follow, but eventually Patty called the Doctors in, between Christmas and New Year in 1841, and Clare was committed to the Northampton General Lunatic Asylum.
Clare's descriptions of rural scenes show a keen and loving appreciation of nature; his knowledge of the natural world went far beyond that of the major Romantic poets, and his love-songs and ballads charm by their genuine feeling.

 Gary Harrison, 'Ambitions Projects'
If his poetry figures Helpston as a composite sign of all that was dear to him as a youth, it also documents with uncommon urgency the destruction of the fields, trees, and landmarks that gave Helpston its distinctive character and Clare a sense of identity.
That is, the poetry that insists upon the presence of Helpston as a stay and anchor of the poet's identity simultaneously marks the very disappearance of Helpston as Clare once knew it.
I choose to focus here on 'The Wish' and 'Helpstone' - both from the early Helpston period - because both poems present the utopian desires of a rustic genius as a transgressive dream or vision that is doomed to fail.

 [No title]
John Clare was born on the 13th of July, 1793, in a small cottage degraded in popular tradition to a mud hut of the parish of Helpston, between Peterborough and Stamford.
A few nights later as her guest he sat in the Peterborough theatre watching the "Merchant of Venice." So vivid was his imagination--for doubtless the strolling players were not in themselves convincing--that he at last began to shout at Shylock and try to attack him on the stage.
Indeed, had the sexton at Helpston been at home, the bearers would have urged him to arrange for the funeral at once; in his absence, they left the coffin in an inn parlour for the night, and a scandal was barely prevented.

We have argued that this is an ancient close, the only green site left in the centre of the village, and part of the Clare heritage, being not only associated with the poet, but visited by people from all over our country and beyond increasingly as Clare's reputation gains international recognition.
Having had over fifty houses built in the centre of Helpston in the last eighteen months, this is a development too far, and some forty or more letters to the Council have argued along similar lines.

While tracing my family history I have collected quite a lot of historical information about the village and some of its former inhabitants and I thought it would be nice to share it with others who may have an interest in Helpston.

Born in 1793, the son of humble and almost illiterate parents, Clare grew up in the Northamptonshire village of Helpston and made the surrounding countryside his world.
His formal education, such as it was, ended when he was eleven years old, but this child of the 'unwearying eye' had a thirst for knowledge and became a model example of the self-taught man. As a poet of rural England he has few rivals.
Ill and in debt, he left Helpston for Northborough from where he was eventually removed to Northampton General Lunatic Asylum, where he died in 1864.
