  The Metal Crypt - Reviews
Reviewing monumental records like the first 3 Helstar records is not an easy task, because while they are definitely required listening for anyone remotely interested in classics of heavy metal, very little has been written about them in the modern metal scene.
With the intent to help change that, I present this, my 3rd Helstar review, and this time we're looking at their debut release Burning Star, which is every bit as good, if not better than the 2 releases which will follow it in the coming 5 years.
Helstar later proved their debut wasn't a fluke with two more five star albums in the late 80s, but Burning Star remains their magnum opus, and will likely never be eclipsed by anyone.

Helstar play that 'underground 80s metal' much like old Fates Warning (you know, when they still used capital letters) or Omen.
Helstar were a bit thrashier, and not even as well known as those two bands when they still existed.
Helstar are a worthy pick for 80s fans, but they never rose up and produced anything as good as the bands that inspired them, and so they remain a good, but not great band from back when.

Helstar is well known by 80's metal fans as one of the prototypical bands of that decade, one of the bands that defined American metal for the era and one that has been quite influential on any number of bands since their reign.
Thus was born Distant Thunder (named, of course, for the 1988 Helstar album), perhaps as much a Rivera solo project as a real band, but nonetheless an outlet for Rivera to continue the Helstar legacy.
The music is solid 80's-inspired American metal, with Rivera as always in top form -- his is a classic metal voice, able to hit Halford-style high notes but always under control and he keeps those high notes to a minimum, unlike others who tend to overdo the wailing 80's vocal style.

Helstar was a Texas-based US metal band formed by former tribute band members Barragan and Pavon.
Helstar was formed in 1982 and released a six-track demo in 1983.
Helstar would drift in and out of the scene's consciousness from then on and would only resurface in headlines upon Rivera's entry into another metal project.

Despite the fact that they never gained the same amount of success like their comrades, they managed to form and keep a loyal fan-base that supported them throughout every single release.

A Helstar record could be a thought, but I think by the time the second Distant Thunder record hits the streets, it will surpass the popularity of both Destiny’s End records.

Most of the Helstar members saw it this way: you can't have both, you can't have a good job and still keep this going.
But, at that point, Helstar got so many line-up changes, and, each time the line-up changed, I was dealing with younger and younger musicians, 'coz that were the only ones that were good.

With his Helstar career, Rivera did numerous US and European tours and festivals with the likes of Megadeth, Anthrax, and the Scorpions in addition to many others.
After the final split of Helstar when the resurgence of power metal hit strongly in the late 1990's, Rivera brought to the Metal Blade table the act Destiny's End, and released two records in 1998 and 2000 (Breathe Deep the Dark and Transition) which resurfaced his name strongly.
In the year 2001, Rivera moved forward with a re-vamped line-up of Helstar that was invited to play the Bang Your Head festival in Germany, which led to a short US tour including the Milwaukee Metalfest and Powermad festival.

This sound would be called death metal, andperhaps the first example of it would be the death-thrash classic 'Seven Churches', from 1985.
Some bands combined speed metaland thrash, like the aforementioned Megadeth, and also Helstar, Testament, and Heathen were known for theirflashy lead guitar work.
Watchtower 's Energetic Disassembly (1985) set new standards in technical, jazzy songwriting, which would later be further developed by the thrash band Coroner and also the technical death metal bands Atheist and Cynic, as well as later efforts byDeath.
