Helvellyn has just opened as a restaurant and I am delighted to review it, but I cannot in any fairness consider my judgement unbiased - I have known the house and its occupants far too long.
Wandering around Helvellyn today it strikes me that well maintained gardens are considerably more durable than human beings.
Helvellyn is a wonderful place to hang out for a day.

Helvellyn is the highest point in a great ridge of fells, is the most frequently climbed mountain in the Lake District and offers unbeatable and spectacular views of the panorama of the Lake District from the its summit, on a clear day almost every fell in the area can be seen.
Helvellyn's most dramatic feature is Striding Edge, a knife edged ridge which has, in the past, gained a fearsome reputation amongst walkers and must be treated with care.
Red Tarn, on the eastern flank of Helvellyn, beneath Catseye Cam and Striding Edge, is one of the highest tarns in the Lake District, lying at an altitude of 2,356 feet and has a depth of 82 feet.

The main walking approaches to Helvellyn are from Grasmere, Withburn and Thirlspot in the West, and Glenridding and Patterdale in the East.
There is some quality about Helvellyn which endears it in the memory of most people who have stood on its breezy top; although it can be a grim place indeed on a wild night, it is, as a rule, a very friendly giant.

The circuit of the ridges of Helvellyn that cradle Red Tarn is probably one of the most popular excursions in all of the English Lake District and it attracts thousands of visitors every year.
For many, the crossing of Striding Edge and Swirral Edge - with a visit to the summit of Helvellyn en route - is their first and sometimes only encounter with the joys and thrills of rock scrambling on one of Britain's finest mountains.
Consequently the majority of pictures taken of Striding Edge Helvellyn are either from along the ridge looking towards the main bulk of the mountain, or from Helvellyn summit itself.

 Catstye Cam to Dollywagon - Walk
From Helvellyn summit it is quicker to head for Helvellyn Lower Man and White Side before descending the zig-zag path down the slopes of Raise and back by Glenridding Beck.
The views from the top of Helvellyn (photo) are superb in all directions (panorama) though it does lack the splendid isolation of Catstye Cam.
There is an iron fence post by the main path to Helvellyn which marks the start of the descent towards Seat Sandal, and the odd fence post on the way down, before a wall is reached with the route alongside it.

Helvellyn from a distance approached from a route from Glenridding (Birkhouse Moor).
The summit of Helvellyn is roughly 950 meters or just over 3000 feet tall so if you don't want to be disappointed by clouded views, when you check the weather take a note of the cloud base level.
The quickest way up and down Helvellyn that I have found to date is from the NT car park at Thirlmere on the A591Ambelside to Keswick road.

Standing higher than all but the Scafells, Helvellyn is the third highest of the Lakeland fells and the most frequently climbed mountain in England.

The third highest in the Lake District, and in England as a whole, this 3,118 ft summit lies between Ullswater (to the east) and Thirlmere (to the west), and is actually just the most elevated point of a ridge of high ground lying north-south and situated between the two aforementioned lakes.
The group falls naturally into two halves, being Helvellyn and its outliers to the south of Sticks pass, and the smoother and grassier Dodds to the north.
Helvellyn's two lateral ridges, Swirral Edge and Striding Edge, both broaden out into fells in their own right, these being Catstycam (2917 ft) and Birkhouse Moor (2350ft) respectively.

At one point, you follow a stone wall on the left, but only for a short time before the path veers away to the right - a divergence from the route indicated on the OS map due to erosion.
Finally you crest the hill, to be met by a fabulous view of Catstye Cam and Helvellyn's summit beyond.
It is well worth veering left and making the short climb along the crest to the top for the stunning views of Grisedale valley enclosed by soaring fells.

Approached by a 0.75-mile track from the village of Glenridding, YHA Helvellyn is in an isolated and peaceful spot, 900 feet above sea level.
Enjoy a hike up Helvellyn or the surrounding peaks or, for less strenuous walking, try the scenic lakeshore paths around Ullswater.
The track to the hostel is suitable for cars and minibuses, but not coaches, ask hostel for details.

On Saturday I raced in the Helvellyn Tri in the Lake District.
Although the distances are reasonable the terrain was brutal and I suspect one of the harder tri's on the circuit - for me, harder than Half Ironman.
Then it was out on the run - to the top of Helvellyn and back.

We have now stayed twice at Helvellyn Cottage, which, apart from the YHA near the old disused mine underneath Whiteside fell, is about as close as you can get to the summit of Helvellyn itself, one of the great peaks of the Lake District.
We had to seize the chance and attempt to conquer Helvellyn via Striding Edge and Swirral Edge while the weather was set fair.
Though Helvellyn via the Edges was most definitely one of the week’s highlights, we enjoyed other splendid walks.

A variant on the classic eastern approach to Helvellyn, taking in the easy Grade 1 scramble ridge of Striding Edge with a return over Nethermost Pike and Dollywagon Pike before the descent of Grisedale.
It's a longer alternative to the classic but short return from Striding via Helvellyn summit and Swirral Edge which many walkers find too short for a satisfying day out.
After a quick detour to the summit cairn, and maybe a break in the summit shelter, it's time to turn south.

Long and broad the mountain actually comprises several peaks, so that a person can have, after nearly 3000 feet of ascent, a bouncy walk with many views along the ridges, till you're ready to come down and and visit a pub.
There are occasional jokes about the number of cairns along Helvellyn.

I am going to sleep very well tonight after doing this!
If you’re saying ‘walk’ up Helvellyn, I take it that you intend to avoid Striding Edge and its rocks.
You’ll be very lucky if you actually see anything from the top, but it’s a great climb, and it’s nice to have been up somewhere like that.
