Hem (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Hem is an indie folk-rock band, fusing together a mix of traditional American music with newer style.
Band members include Sally Ellyson (vocals), Dan Messé (piano, accordion, glockenspiel), Gary Maurer (guitar, mandolin), Steve Curtis (guitar, mandolin, banjo, back-up vocals), Catherine Popper (bass guitar), Mark Brotter (drums), Bob Hoffnar (pedal steel guitar), and Heather Zimmerman (violin).
In an attempt to satisfy her, Dan skeptically asked for a demo but was surprised when he heard the very spare tape, a sample of unaccompanied classical lullabyes that Sally had made for the son of a long-time friend.

The hem may be sewn down with a line of invisible hem-stitch or blind-stitch or sewn down by a sewing machine, usually leaving a visible line of sewing.
Heavy material with deep hems may be hemmed with what is called a dress-maker´s hem — an extra line of loose running stitch is added in the middle of the hem, so that all the weight of the cloth does not hang from one line of stitching.
Hems can be serged (see serger), hand rolled and then sewn down with tiny stitches (still seen as a high-class finish to handkerchiefs), pinked with pinking shears, piped, covered with binding (this is known as a Hong Kong finish), or made with many other inventive treatments.

 GO Brooklyn
Hem's debut album was written when composer Dan Messe was living on Cobble Hill's Warren Street - hence the album's title, "Rabbit Songs" - inspired by the meaning of the word warren, a place where rabbits live.
The band spent the summer of 2000 recording late nights and selling their possessions to cover the cost of the orchestra and studio time.
With influences as far flung as Ella Fitzgerald and contemporary alternative bands, Hem's music is an exotic blend of traditional country and folk that sometimes reaches classical proportions.

When hem bands are knitted with a smaller size needle than that used for the rest of the garment, change the row to row ratio.
Because the hem band rows knitted on a smaller size needle are shorter, when attaching a front band which has been knitted on larger needles, skip every fourth row at the side of the hem band, then continue as previously described.
Bands do require concentration and counting, and skipping or missing stitches or rows when joining or picking up stitches, but the perfect finish you will achieve is worth the effort.

Hem will be performing tonight at the Knitting Factory, wrapping up promotion of its third full-length album, "No Word from Tom," and giving audiences a taste of its forthcoming September release.
The band translates the songs' comforting quality to its performances but the new versions often adopt a fresh appeal due both to the organic evolution of the musical themes and lyrics as well as the changing ensemble onstage.
Hem's music (as well as the story behind it) is incomparable to a lot of music released these days, which can be dangerous in an industry more focused on selling already-popularized sounds than working to pioneer new trends.

 George Graham Reviews Hem's "Eveningland"
Hem started in New York in 1999 when two friends, songwriter and keyboard player Dan Messé and producer, engineer and guitarist Gary Maurer decided to collaborate on an album, with a kind of Americana theme.
Hem's personnel remains as on the last CD, with the four extra musicians of the Rabbit Songs now being a regular part of what is has become an eight-piece band.
The mix has everything in the right place, and the string orchestra is recorded and integrated well with the rest of the instrumentation, but the band's acoustic instruments have a noticeably compressed sound, even though the overall dynamic range of the recording is somewhat better than the dismal contemporary average for pop albums.

When the band first got together, Dan had recently been dumped by a seamstress and thought that a song named "Hem" would be an appropriate ending for that relationship.
With all the technical problems we had over there (see every Hem interview/article for the past two years), we never really had time to work out the arrangement, and when we finally played through the song with the orchestra, it was clear that it needed a lot of work.
Hem's guitar and mandolin player Gary Maurer worked in the studio on the original version of this song recorded by the band Fountains of Wayne.

Hem masters classic country roots, melancholy lyrics on ‘Rabbit Songs’ - THE DAILY BRUIN ONLINE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Hem has found success in sticking to the roots of American music, and producing a sound and image which purposely hearkens back to a traditional, organic style of Americana.
Hem's debut album, titled "Rabbit Songs,"; has garnered mild critical acclaim, and despite not coming out on a major label, snagged the number one sales spot on Amazon.com soon after its June release.
Hem's music, which, according to Messé, is best described as "haunted country lullabies," relies primarily on the prettiness of the simple country tunes Messé writes augmented by sparsely lush strings and singer Sally Ellyson's soaring voice.

Front bands can be added by picking up stitches along each side of the front opening and then knitting some rows in a chosen pattern stitch, or a separate band can be knitted and joined to the garment.
Fluted or wavy bands mean that too many stitches have been picked up along the edge, and the band is longer than the front of the cardigan or jacket.
A front band that has too few stitches or rows means that the band is shorter than the length of the front of the garment.

Although lead vocalist Sally Ellyson hails from Richmond, local fans needed to travel to Charlottesville or D.C. to catch her band Hem’s current tour — or else make do with this compilation of live recordings, outtakes and covers.
Most notably, the band gives its jangling take on “Radiation Vibe” — not so sticky-sweet as the Fountains of Wayne original — and the R.E.M. classic “South Central Rain,” played here with a warm familiarity slightly at odds with the youthful melodrama of the original.
Undeniably derivative of every indie band you care to name, these four teenagers compensate for technical shortcomings with energetic confidence and intelligent lyrics.

Hem's "Rabbit Songs" is a beautiful mix of soft gentle melodies that soothe and lull you.
My favorite track is Steve Curtis' "Night Like A River" with the happy pluck of strings, "I could live a long while on the sweetness of her breath." Hem does a great reading on the traditional song "The Cuckoo." The instrumental "Waltz" is a very dear reflective piece with Meese's piano and Heather Zimmerman's violin.
The CD concludes with "Horsey," "You float over everyone in your rings and your wing-tip shoes." "Rabbit Songs" is a delightful CD because it is both well done and different; it feels old and new at the same time.

That the chair is currently in the employ of her band mate Dan Messé hardly bothers Ellyson: Hem is like her family, she says, and when families the size of hers are on tour they spend all day riding in vans smaller than this coffee joint, so she’s used to it.
When Ellyson proudly announces that a false start near the end of their set is not the result of her “fucking up” for once, it’s a bit like hearing your third-grade teacher tell her husband to shove it on the faculty-lounge telephone.
Ellyson adds that though she shares some faves with the band’s NPR-listening, Amazon-shopping crowd, her formative years were spent digging indie-rock acts such as Built to Spill, whose Doug Martsch she once met at a show and acted like a total freak toward.
