Hemerythrin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hemerythrin and myohemerythrin are essentially colorless when deoxygenated, but turn a violet-pink in the oxygenated state.
Hemerythrin and myohemerythrin are often described according to oxidation and ligation states of the iron center:
Hemerythrin typically exists as an homooctamer or heterooctamer composed of α- and β-type subunits of 13-14 kDa each, although some species have dimeric, trimeric and tetrameric hemerythrins.

 Hemerythrin
Hemerythrin is a protein responsible for oxygen transportation in the marine invertebrate phyla of sipuniculids[?], priapulids[?], brachiopods, and in a single annelid worm, magelona[?].
Hemerythrin is not, as the name might suggest, a heme.
The "heme" was at first applied to any oxygen-carrying proteins, such as hemoglobin, and when hemoglobin was analyzed, the heme structure was named for the iron-porphyrin cofactor in the transport protein (globin being a general term for a globular protein).

In chemistry, an oligomer consists of a finite number of monomer units (oligo is Greek for a few), in contrast to a polymer which, at least in principle, consists of an infinite number of monomers.
Structure of Heme b A haem or heme is a prosthetic group that consists of an iron atom contained in the center of a large heterocyclic organic ring called a porphyrin.
Hemerythrin and myohemerythrin are often described according to oxidation and ligation states of the iron center: Glutamate is the anion of glutamic acid.

The color is due to the presence of the respiratory pigment hemerythrin in vessel-like coelomic channels in the tentacles.
Hemerythrin in the tentacular coelom is oxygenated in the tentacles and the hemerythrocytes moved posteriorly by the ciliated and muscular peritoneum of the contractile vessel.
In the trunk coelom oxygen is transferred from hemerythrocytes of the contractile vessel to hemerythrocytes of the trunk coelom for distribution to the tissues.

Priapulida - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The nervous system, composed of a ring and a ventral cord, retains its primitive connection with the ectoderm.
There are no specialized sense-organs or vascular or respiratory systems (hemerythrin is the protein responsible for oxygen transportation).
There is a wide body-cavity, but as this has no connection with the renal or reproductive organs it cannot be regarded as a coelom, but probably is a blood-space or haemocoel.

Hemerythrin is a non-heme iron protein used by two phyla of marine invertebrates (sipunculids and brachiopods) for oxygen transfer and/or storage.
The two iron atoms in hemerythrin are bound the imidazole rings of five histidine residues and the carboxylates of an aspartic acid and a glutamic acid.
In some brachiopods though, hemerythrin shows cooperativity between the subunits, so it will interesting to see what parts of the protein structure give rise to that inter-subunit communication.

 blood varieties
Hemerythrin is an iron-containing proteinous pigment found in the blood of certain bottom-dwelling marine worms, including some nematodes and annelids, and brachiopods.
Coboglobin blood would be colorless or slightly pink when oxygen-enriched, but dark yellow or deep amber in the veins.
Organisms with these kinds of blood pigments thus would not be poisoned by the gas, as humans are.) A molecule of coboglobin loses its ability to reversibly bind oxygen in less than a day, compared with weeks in the case of human hemoglobin.

The respiratory protein, hemerythrin, contains two non-heme iron atoms and resembles a large class of di-iron proteins which activate dioxygen in various ways.
The reversible uptake of dioxygen by hemerythrin is the inspiration for the present study.
This involves the construction of bimetallic complexes which are capable of binding a substrate such as molecular oxygen to one metal and, upon binding, the substrate is reduced by two electrons, one from each metal as occurs in hemerythrin.

A common feature of these enzymes appears to be the formation of an initial peroxo intermediate from the reduced enzyme.
However, in the respiratory protein, hemerythrin, binding of dioxygen is accomplished by reduction to peroxide in a reaction that is readily reversible.
In ribonucleotide reductase, peroxide is similarly formed but decomposes irreversibly to a ferryl intermediate that is capable of carrying out oxidative chemistry.

Arginase and Mn-substituted ribonucleotide reductase have symmetric nearest neighbor environments with low RMS deviation in bond length, while Mn catalase and Mn-substituted hemerythrin appear to have a larger RMS bond length deviation.
3d areas for Mn catalase and Mn-substituted hemerythrin are larger, suggesting that one or both of the Mn ions are five-coordinate in these proteins.
The EXAFS spectra for Mn-substituted ribonucleotide reductase and arginase are nearly identical, with symmetric Mn-nearest neighbor environments and outer shell scattering consistent with a lower limit of one histidine per Mn core.
