The new Dodge Hemi V8 engine
In addition to Ram, Durango, and Grand Cherokee duty, the Chrysler Hemi is used in the LX large cars, in front of a Mercedes five-speed automatic which early reports suggest is much more troublesome than the Hemi itself (though still pretty solid).
The new Hemi is precision cast, which allows it to be lighter than a typical 5.7 liter engine, even with a taller deck height than Chevy's; and, partly to counter the inertia of its relatively long stroke, the pistons were made light as well, using cast eutectic alloy.
For longevity, the Hemi pistons use a hard anodize on the top ring land, to act as a heat barrier and anti-micro weld mix, and to allow the top ring to be only 3 mm from the top of the piston, cutting emissions while bringing more power.

Gene felt that Hemi was superior to the Olds for two simple reasons: the configuration of the combustion chambers and the fact that the back of the block was modern.
The Hemi’s torque smoked the 8.20x15 skins for about 10 feet off the line, then ol’ Don shoved that yard-long shifter into Second and he held it to 70, when he was in the glare of Phillips’ headlights.
Hemi cars trampled the field at the 1964 Daytona 500, and by the time the outlandish winged Dodge Daytona Chargers and Plymouth Superbirds added aero to the equation, NASCAR had had enough of the engine’s dominance.

 The New Chrysler Hemi
The Hemi's roller hydraulic lifter is good to at least 6,200 rpm which is as high as the factory has run it to, but test data we have seen indicates it may be good to 6,750.
The advantage of a hemi design of combustion chamber is that the valves (and most importantly the intake valve) are always moving away from the shrouding effect of the cylinder walls (Fig 2) as they lift off the seats.
The hemi style of combustion chamber was put to good use during WWII when the output of supercharged aero engines could basically decide the fate of nations.

Where the HEMI is the big winnerl is in the all-around numbers, and being a smaller motor than the V-10s means less of that recommended 89 octane will be purchased each time you visit the gas pump.
Where the HEMI does get outclassed is in the towing realm, where the diesel motors rule the landscape with their massive 500+ torque values.

 Howstuffworks "How HEMI Engines Work"
The HEMI engine for automobiles was born in 1948 -- Harry Westlake and several others developed a Hemi 6-cylinder engine for Jaguar.
Chrysler continued improving the HEMI design, releasing a 354-cubic-inch design in 1956, a 392 cubic-inch design in 1957, and ultimately a 426-cubic-inch (7-liter) version in 1964.
The 426 engine set the HEMI legend in stone when it won first, second and third place in the 1964 Daytona 500 NASCAR race.

When DaimlerChrysler revived its classic Hemi engine two years ago, executives knew the 345-horsepower beast would do well with Dodge loyalists like Moyer, who is on his fourth Ram truck, and baby boomers who remembered the Hemi from its former life in 1960s Chrysler muscle cars.
He thinks initial interest in the Hemi for those cars could be in the same 50%-plus range that's been found on the Dodge truck side, although he predicts Hemi sales in the 300 and Magnum will flatten out to about 30% over time.

 6.1-LITER HEMI V-8
Although the Chrysler HEMI® was born in the 1950s and entered into legend in the 1960s and ‘70s, today’s version took much of its inspiration from the original --particularly the namesake hemispherical combustion chambers that provide power and efficiency.
But when powertrain engineers at Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) set about developing their own 6.1-liter version of the HEMI V-8, the mandate was more: in all, 25 percent more power – an additional 85 horsepower and 30 lb.-ft. of torque -- than the 5.7-liter HEMI first found in the Chrysler 300C.
The developers of the SRT 6.1-liter HEMI engine achieved their goals -- 425 horsepower, 420 lb.-ft. of torque -- with time-honored methods: add more cubic inches, increase compression ratio, redesign the cylinder heads, intake and exhaust systems for better flow, and increase engine speed.
