Hemimorphite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hemimorphite Zn4Si2O7(OH)2.H2O is a mineral which has been mined from days of old from the upper parts of zinc- and lead-based ores, chiefly associated with smithsonite.
The silicate was the rarer of the two, and was named hemimorphite on account of the hemimorph development of its crystals.
Hemimorphite most frequently occurs as the product of the oxidation of the upper parts of sphalerite, accompanied by other secondary minerals which form the so-called 'iron cap' or 'gossan'.

It is decomposed by hydrochloric acid with gelatinization; this property affords a ready means of distinguishing hemimorphite from calamine (zinc carbonate), these two minerals being, when not crystallized, very like each other in appearance.
The water contained in hemimorphite is expelled only at a red heat, and the mineral must therefore be considered as a basic metasilicate, (ZnOH)ISiOa.
The name hemimorphite was given by G. Kenngott in 1853 because of the typical hemimorphic development of the crystals.

Hemimorphite is found in a variety of colors including blue-green, green, white, colorless, brown and yellow.
With its Zinc concentration, Hemimorphite is commonly used as a source of minor ore of zinc.
Commonly found in two distinct crystal forms, Hemimorphite is noted for its magnificent "sprays" and clusters of very glassy, clear or white, thin, bladed crystals which are prominently displayed in nearly every mineral museum in the world.

The mineral also occurs as stalactitic or botryoidal masses with a fibrous structure, or in a massive, cellular or granular condition intermixed with calamine and clay.
Hemimorphite occurs with other ores of zinc (calamine and blende), forming veins and beds in sedimentry limestones.
British localities are Matlock, Aiston, Mendip Hills and Leadhills; at Roughten Gill, Caldbeck Fells, Cumberland, it occurs as mammillated incrustations of a sky-blue color.

Process for preparation of synthetic crystalline zinc silicate mineral having a sauconite, willemite or hemimorphite ...
A crystalline zinc silicate mineral of the sauconite, hemimorphite or willemite type is prepared by subjecting an acid-treated product of a clay mineral and an oxide or hydroxide of zinc or a compound capable of forming this oxide or hydroxide under reaction conditions to a hydrothermal treatment.
According to this known process, zinc nitrate is reacted with ethyl silicate to form a gel of zinc silicate and this gel of zinc silicate is subjected to a hydrothermal treatment under a high pressure of 500 to 40,000 psi at a temperature of 180.degree.
The zinc silicate mineral of the hemimorphite or willemite type is characterized in that the oil absorption is large though the surface activity is relatively low.

Hemimorphite intergrowths with quartz and secondarily with clay minerals are common for the studied products in all size fractions, although less frequently for rougher and cleaner concentrates; associations of hemimorphite with carbonates and/or iron oxides are less usual.
The zinc is essentially associated to hemimorphite and clay minerals despite minor content related to smithsonite and sphalerite; the zinc content related to hemimorphite varies from 27% (final tailings) to 95% (final concentrate) of the total zinc, with a value of 85% for the flotation feed.
Hemimorphite liberation degree for the studied products is above 95% with the exception of the final tailings, which presents an average liberation degree of 83% with values between 65 and 75% for the size fractions above 37 µm.

The name hemimorphite is derived from an uncommon subdivison of the orthorhombic crystal system known as hemimorphic, or "half-formed".
Clusters of hemimorphite that show well shaped crystals do not always show the hemimorphic character because the crystals of a single specimen tend to grow outward with either the "top" or the "bottom" as the overall orientation for that specimen.
Specimens of hemimorphite tend to be of two very different forms; the bladed crystal form and the botryoidal habit.
