 Neil Peart ― Discography
A note on the reviews: Reviewing Rush albums against other Rush albums is a difficult task; each album is unique and has strengths and weaknesses.
Neil once said that the first 7 or 8 Rush albums were "experimental," and with this in mind you can see the vision coming into focus with this album.
Dreamline, the first track on the album, is one of the best songs Rush has ever written, and became the lead-off song on many Rush tours.

 Daily Vault - May 24, 2002
Hemispheres is the kind of album one picks up merely to say they have the entire Rush discography - and while I admit I hadn't listened to this album in some time, my opinion of it hasn't changed too much from the day I first bought it.
Hemispheres, Rush's 1978 release (and sixth studio album), is the questionable release in Rush's second stage.
But for each period, there is also at least one album which makes the listener wonder just what Rush is doing.

Epinions.com - The Sci-Fi and Hard Rock Relationship Continues with Rush's Cygnus X-1 Saga
The songs, entitled Cygnus X-1, Book I: The Voyage from their A Farewell to Kings album and Cygnus X-1, Book II: Hemispheres from their Hemispheres album show just how versatile, how inspirational, how dynamic Rush could be.
Their 1976 concept album 2112 gave birth to that label and it was further established when Rush released a 2-song series which spanned their next two albums.
During my last entry in the Science Fiction Writer's Category, I discussed how Rush, the Canadian Rock Power Trio, has often been labeled as a Sci-Fi influenced rock band.

Hemispheres (1978 album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hemispheres is interesting in that it is partly a continuation of the last song on Rush's previous album, A Farewell to Kings (Cygnus X-1, Book I: The Voyage), in that the theme of Cygnus is revisited both lyrically and musically.
Hemispheres is the sixth studio album by the Canadian rock band Rush, released in 1978 (see 1978 in music).
This album continues Rush's trend of using the fantasy and science fiction lyrics written by Neil Peart.

Some disagree, of course, but this string of Rush albums, from '2112' to 'Moving Pictures', is the reason why this band is one of the most respected prog bands on the planet and probably my favorite band of all time.
This is RUSH at their hard progressive best, and despite achieving excellence in other directions, nothing they or anyone else does will ever quite match this album again.
If you like the former Rush albums or generaly prog based on rifs and not solos after solos this is your album.

Although the Hemispheres album isn't necessarily one I'd recommend for fans who are new to the band, it's definitely a worthwhile addition to any Rush collection.
Rush's seventh album Hemispheres was released in October, 1978.
Hemispheres remains one of the most unique, out-and-out jamming albums rock music has ever produced.

After 1978's Hemispheres, Rush achieved even greater popularity with 1980's Permanent Waves, a record marked by Peart's dramatic shift into shorter, less sprawling compositions; the single "The Spirit of Radio" even became a major hit.

Not an album for the casual fan (what with an 18 minute suite, only four songs, and a near 10 minute instrumental) this is a fan favorite Rush album.
This is an album to get if you are a big fan of Rush, but if you are a more casual fan or want an introduction to the band get Moving Pictures.
The opening title suite is a great piece that closes the story started in Cygnus X-I. La Villa Strangiato is one of my favorite all-time instrumentals, and The Trees has some of the best lyrics ever written.

As the closing album of Rush's classic progressive period, this is possibly the album where they reached their peak in composition and concept.
About getting this album at first, because it has a mere 4 songs on it (easily the shortest Rush album track wise) and I've never been a big fan of the song "The Trees." But, borrowing this album from a friend I was pleasantly suprised to find out that this is a fantastic album.
Hemispheres explores the political, social economic, and sci-fi themes prevalent on their early work, continuing the saga of "Cygnus" from A Farewell To Kings.

The best of those albums are as follows: Moving Pictures (1981), Permanent Waves (1980), Hemispheres (1978) and if you'd like to purchase a live Rush CD, I'd strongly recommend Exit Stage Left (1981).
There is no better Rush compilation, so the only thing I could recommend after the purchase of this CD would be the original albums from which the material came.
This compilation CD takes 16 tracks from their greatest albums and best years.

"Hemispheres" probably more than any other Rush album brought the band in touch with a much wider audience.
When the album was released in October, Rush started on their "Hemispheres" world tour which was to last until June the following year and see the band playing a startling total of 113 dates in Canada, the States, Britain and Europe.

Introductions over, the newcomer reverendly placed the copy of Rush's new Hemispheres album on the turntable (he wouldn't let anyone else touch it) and we settled back for a listen.
Hemispheres did the impossible by even rising above the barely comparable 2112 epic and Farewell to Kings and proved that the concept album isn't an endless track but a story with chapters, which here have a magical quality.
That opinion remains unchanged over 25 years later and I still regard Hemispheres as one of the all time classic albums, I can never go too long without playing it and the music still sounds as fresh and invigorating as ever.

 PROGRESSIVEWORLD.NET: REVIEWS BY TOM KARR
In my opinion, and that of many other writers as well, Rush’s recorded output (at least for the first fifteen albums that I am mostly familiar with) has tended to go through major changes of style after groups of four albums, which are then followed with live releases.
Hemispheres allowed guitarist Alex Lifeson to further expand his mainly Zeppelin-ish guitar style into a more symphonic keyboard like style while maintaining the crunch and punch of more traditional metal guitar playing.
This debut, and the next three albums, displayed a band that was on the move, on a move from being a Zeppelin and The Who knockoff band to becoming what might arguably be called the first real progressive metal band.

Hemispheres was traditionally my favorite Rush album, the pinnacle of their achievements.
Other tracks are inherently catchy and energetic, particularly "Face Up" or the excellent album opener "Dreamline" (one of the best Rush songs in ages).
Perhaps doctored in the studio, the production of this album is fantastic, giving these songs great life onstage and the performances are roundly wonderful from the three members.

"Hemispheres" is ultimately half of a great album, not the sustained brilliance of "Permanent Waves" or "Moving Pictures", but deservedly a staple in any balanced repast of RUSH.
Hemispheres is a very solid album that won't disappoint.
"Hemispheres" divulged a band that was firing on all musical pistons: top notch instrumentation, fantastical lyrics, superb production and sound quality, and most importantly, riveting compositions that'll keep your mind and ears wide open, your face smiling, and your air guitar wailing!

 RollingStone.com: Hemispheres : Rush : Review
Fans will doubtless find Hemispheres another good, solid Rush album.
"Hemispheres," the obligatory space opera, was meant to expand on "Cygnus X-1" from A Farewell to Kings, but the musical and thematic references are only tangential; on the new LP, the words belabor the bejesus out of the heart/mind dichotomy and skimp on the science fiction.

Well, 90% of the material is from the preceding four albums, and they generally choose good songs from the rather hit-or-miss A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres albums ("La Villa Strangiato" and "Xanadu" are on here; "Hemispheres" and "Cygnus X-1" are not).

This is a great Rush album overall, but I don’t think it’s the greatest progressive rock album ever made like some try telling me it is. Buy it.
For large parts of this album, the backing tracks are simple not enticing enough to keep you interested for repeated listening, even if they do still contains the usual Rush melodic content.
