Hemostat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A hemostat, also called a hemostatic clamp is a surgical tool which resembles a set of scissors with a locking clamp replacing the blade.
A hemostat is commonly used in both surgery and emergency medicine to control bleeding, especially from a torn blood vessel, until the bleeding can be repaired by stitches or other surgical techniques.
Hemostats are part of the first aid kit carried by combat lifesavers and paramedics.

 Control Bleeding
The novel hemostat (blood-clotting agent) also may one day help anesthesiologists reduce the need for surgical transfusions, a particular hazard of liver, heart, orthopedic, trauma and vascular surgeries, Mark H. Ereth, M.D., an anesthesiologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, said.
Anesthesiologists at Mayo Clinic have received approval for additional investigations to use the hemostat on patients having surgery of the heart, spleen, kidney or the soft tissue surrounding bones.
Protocols for the hemostat's application in laparoscopic and thorascopic procedures are currently being developed.

Procedurally, we decided in advance to use a hemostat to compress the tissue and then to split the skin with a cautery pen (we expected only one or two strikes with the pen to be necessary).
The actual insertion was only very mildly uncomfortable, and this was only so due to the fact that my urethra had become slightly irritated in the days prior due to the rubbing of my jewelry on my clothing.

Microfibrillar collagen hemostat (MCH) is a topical agent composed of resorbable microfibrillar collagen prepared to preserve the native bovine collagen molecules.
This hemostatic agent is contraindicated as the sole hemostatic control in patients who have systemic problems causing hemorrhage.
We conclude that the hemostatic agent presented here appears to be a viable alternative in controlling intraoperative and postoperative hemorrhage from the dental alveolus because it is both biocompatible and effective.
